A Message from the Saskatoon Police Service:

Bicycles, sports equipment, as well as tools are being stolen out of vehicles and outbuildings (detached garages, sheds). Saskatoon Police are noticing that the people responsible for the thefts are either wandering around your neighborhood at night checking door handles of vehicles, and buildings. If any vehicles or buildings is found to be unlocked, these people help themselves to whatever property they can get ahold of.

Saskatoon Police Services are requesting that if you have anything of value, anything you don’t want stolen, please take it into your homes. If you have bikes, please lock the bike up with the appropriate bike locks, and then please lock the garage or outbuildings you have it stored in.

The Police have laminated signs, “All Valuables Removed” that you can pick up from Saskatoon Police Service. They are used to place in your vehicle to deter people breaking in.

We are all responsible for the security of our homes, and property, and working together we can prevent crime.

May 2026 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the May 20, 2026 VVCA board meeting:

– presentation by Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN). They are an investigative unit of the Provincial Protective Services and target properties that may harbour illegal activities (drugs, prostitution, abuse, gang, etc). They are peace officers, work with local police and other services, and can issue warnings, require residents to vacate a property, or issue safety orders that can temporarily close a property or business. Complaints can be done confidentially by phone or online.
– SUM theatre in the park on THURSDAY MAY 21, 7PM, Grosvenor Park
– Spring cleanup is Saturday May 30, 8:30AM-1PM, Church of Latter Day Saints parking lot (10th & Cumberland). Come out and help clean the neighbourhood!
– Arbor Week is next week, and includes a presentation by VVCA members discussing the tree planting area on 14th Street.
– would like to request a report from our City Councillor for each meeting.
– Brunskill School is hosting a Movie in the Schoolyard on June 3. VVCA will contribute to event.
– Brunskill School is fundraising to add playground equipment to the schoolyard. VVCA will contribute to the fund.
– Street sweeping has begun in the city. Check the city website for dates for your streets.
– President Murray new trees have been determined (larch, ash, walnut and oak). No date on planting yet.
– Albert Community Centre daycare is fundraising to upgrade their playground fencing.
– All spring programs going well. Some new programs may be coming in the fall (sewing, abstract art). May be some price increases for programs in the fall. Some ESL students have been subsidized by Barb’s generosity and cost as a barrier policy. Need to determine with City about funding for policy. Fall registration will be September 10 & 15.
– still looking for an Equipment Coordinator.
– would like to have a co-editor for the VVCA newsletter. Deadline for fall issue is August 1.
– Community garden had their work-bee on May 13. Have to fix the water valve at the school. Waiting list for garden plots.
– committee will have a meeting about the Colonial on June 11.
– President Murray Park committee had some ideas for park. Need a plan and timeframe from City. Wondering how to get on the list for the park updates? Plans to install ‘poo’ bags in park to decrease amount of dog feces left in the park by bad pet owners. High costs to replace benches, lighting or pathways.
– letter to be sent to government about City campaign donations by developers.
– upzoning position statement accepted as guidance for the board.
– Tulip & Flower festival is underway, with a few uptakes in participation already. Some media coverage as well.
– VVCA to write letter about derelict house on Osler Street – potential fire danger and health concerns.
– next meeting is a social get-together in June.

Tulip and Flower Festival — Saskatoon

May 15, 2026 – September 15, 2026

For thousands of years, flower gardens have brought joy, beauty, and comfort to those who visit them. They enhance quality of life by supporting mental well-being, fostering community pride, and creating welcoming and attractive public and private spaces.

In that spirit, 1040 University Drive (The Mann House) is proud to host Saskatoon’s first Tulip and Flower Festival from May 15, 2026 to September 15, 2026. Visitors will be able to enjoy approximately 250,000 flowering plants throughout the season. All citizens are warmly encouraged to come and experience the beauty as it unfolds.

This festival is designed to be community-driven. Residents of Saskatoon who have flower beds in their front yards are invited to participate by submitting:
• Photographs or diagrams of their gardens (from the 2025 season), and,
• A brief written request expressing their interest in being included.

There are no time constraints to Registration; but for 2026 there will be no registration fee.

Participation Criteria:
• At least 60% of the front yard must be dedicated to flowers.
• Gardens must be clearly and freely visible from the sidewalk.
• Backyard gardens are not eligible, as the festival is intended to be fully accessible to the public.

Together, we can create a celebration of flowers that enhances neighbourhood beauty, strengthens community spirit, and provides enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.

April 2026 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the April 15, 2026 board meeting:

– SUM Theatre shows on May 13 and 21.
– Spring cleanup on Saturday May 30
– new valve needed for the tree planting area on 14th Street
– “Community Safety Committee” reported on issues around Colonial. City parks department will be doing weekly cleaning of areas around Cumberland Park. Garbage from the bins at the back of the hotel are often scattered.
– finalizing reports needed to submit to City for annual grant.
– spring programming all going ahead. Need a new equipment coordinator. Soccer balls and pumps funding provided for outdoor soccer program.
– community garden registration is open.
– civics: letter sent to City opposing upzoning request for development on Clarence Ave. Civics committee will develop a policy statement regarding upzoning to next board meeting for consideration.
– City has approved proclamation for Bulb & Flower Festival for 2026. Clinton will place an ad in the newspaper about it. VVCA will foot the bill.
– suggested forming a ‘Heritage Committee’. Clinton will develop a proposal for next meeting.
– next meeting is Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

February 2026 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the February 25, 2026 VVCA board meeting:

– SUM Theatre will be presenting their Theatre in the Park for the 14th year! Preview show in Raoul Wallenberg Park on Thursday May 14. More details to come.
– Spring cleanup date changed to Saturday, May 30. Volunteers and trucks welcome!
– group looking at community issues surrounding the Colonial are hoping for a March meeting with Police liaison and others.
– Annual General Meeting will be April 15. Some board positions will be coming open: Secretary, President Elect, Member at Large.
– finances in good shape. Payment to program instructors will be coming up soon. Books sent to accountant for review before AGM.
– spring program registration is March 24 in Brunskill School front foyer. Program listings on the website. Winter programs running okay.
– rink light poles will be replaced soon – city has to coordinate with rink crew. Some old benches from Harry Bailey centre are available from the City – may be useful for seating by the rink?
– rink crew has been short-handed while trying to deal with multiple heavy snow falls. Maybe coordinate with school (band program? grade 8 grads?) for help? Call for volunteers on school’s Edsby portal.
– some Luther Tower residents are concerned about state of President Murray Park, so Judee will speak with them about plans. Judee asked for City contacts to coordinate possible planning of benches, lighting, dog droppings bag dispenser, etc.
– civics committee position statement on upzoning was tabled for consideration and more input. Include in newsletter and ask for feedback from community?
– 400 block Clarence Avenue development deadline for community feedback has been extended to March 5. VVCA to submit a letter opposing upzoning, but not density. Members are encouraged to do so as well.
– Provincial Cities Act is open for review. VVCA to submit a letter.
– next meeting is Wednesday, March 25, 2026 (usual 3rd Wednesday was not available).

January 2026 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the January 21, 2026 VVCA board meeting:

– Brunskill rink is on the City’s list to have its light poles replaced in the future.
– City community cleanup meeting is February 5.
– VVCA bylaw review to be done by small committee.
– 9-10 trees to be planted in President Murray park later this year, once stumps are gone.
– City park improvement grant applications open next month. Could be used for additional trees? Or assist with Albert Childcare Coop playground upgrades?
– discussion about issues around Colonial Square Inn. Homeless, vagrants appear to congregate, causing problems in area and neighbourhood. Collected data showed ~60% of nuisance and crime issues in neighbourhood were related to the Colonial. Manager in attendance noted problems seem to have started during COVID. They have placed ‘no loitering’ signage and employed security people and cameras, but would like better police enforcement and action. Small VVCA committee will arrange meeting with police liaison, City Councillor, Colonial manager, others.
– cross country ski trails have been groomed in Grosvenor Park.
– thank you to Angela (and Barb) for organizing the Skate Party at Brunskill rink on January 16. Well attended event even though the weather was very cold. Also big thank you to rink crew – the ice was great despite the melt earlier in the week.
– most programs going ahead, except for Learn to Skate and ESL Written English due to low registrations. Cost as a barrier funds could be used for low enrolment programs. Spring program registration scheduled for March 24.
– rink in good shape. Cost for water shed too prohibitive. Will make do with longer hose. Some more rink advertiser renewals confirmed.
– spring newsletter content and ad deadline Feb. 25. Need to print and distribute before spring registration date. Also to give notice of April AGM.
– discussions about whether VVCA should have a ‘blanket’ response to non-conforming developments or review case-by-case. Issue raised due to 6-storey development proposed on Clarence Avenue, which is a 4-storey maximum zoned area.
– concerns by resident about a proposed 4-storey development adjacent his house near Wiggins and 13th. Development is part of City / Housing Accelerator Fund rezoning.
– next meeting is Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

Please join us Friday January 16, 2026 from 4pm-6pm to celebrate being outside and enjoying winter in Varsity View with VVCA at the Brunskill rink!

Come celebrate our four-year anniversary since the rink renovation in 2021. Thank you to the donors and volunteers who made, and continue to make, this rink a reality for the community!

We’ll have skating, hockey, a few games as well as some sweet treats, coffee and delicious hot chocolate supplied by Tish at D’lish!

Everyone is welcome, from Varsity View and beyond. It’s a time for just relaxing and having some fun outside among friends. Come out and meet your neighbours!

November 2025 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the November 19, 2025 regular board meeting:

– cross-country ski trails request has been submitted. City will be only doing Grosvenor Park trail.
– street trees update: representatives from VVCA, Nutana Community Association and SOS Trees attended the public hearing and spoke out against the proposed City bylaw to allow front yard underground excavation/parking for multiplexes. The bylaw passed unmodified, however the City expressed hope that admin would find more effective methods of public consultation. Also, a representative of SOS Trees will be part of any discussions where developers and urban forestry disagree.
– 14th Street tree planting project is going well. Two spruce trees that were eaten by rabbits are been replaced by the City. Watering going well. Project under budget this year.
– winter 2026 indoor programs are booked. Tae Kwon Do had a successful competition in Scotland, winning 6 silver and 2 bronze.
– Basketball program is looking for coaches to form Junior and Senior skills teams.
– Brunskill SCC suggested a rink warm up shack with water access be built. Shacks can be expensive and lack security, and water access is difficult. Quote will be asked for.
– work continues on contacting rink board advertisers to renew contracts. Principal contacted regarding students destroying the ad boards.
– newsletter going to printer at beginning of December. Johanna attended City newsletter workshop.
– Albert Community Centre renovations continuing. Some delays, but not unexpected due to project size and complexity.
– discussions about Colonial Hotel and frustration in neighbourhood with increased theft, vandalism, needles, garbage. Possible meeting with Hotel manager or invitation to future meeting?
– trees in President Murray Park: Cate, of City urban forestry/parks, attended along with Councillor Jasmin Parker. Plan to deal with trees will take time and (scarce) resources. Preliminary plans are to plant east end of park (Wiggins Ave) in 2026 with a few deciduous trees. Contract for stump removal (grinding) will be tendered in spring 2026 with work done in summer.
– next board meeting will be January 21, 2026.

October 2025 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the October 15, 2025 VVCA board meeting:

– VVCA to send request for grooming of neighbourhood cross-country ski trails to the City for consideration.
– provide letter of support for local resident promoting “Official Tulip and Flower Festival” next year. Possible newsletter article in spring.
– possible advanced ESL classes coming in VVCA January 2026 programming.
– Trees Canada planting along 14th Street may have some conflicts with proposed USask Stadium Square development roadway. City may need to move plantings to accommodate.
– discussion about state of trees in President Murray Park. No information from City or Parks yet. VVCA will form a committee to advocate for the park and meet with City. Article for newsletter planned.
– programs running well, with only Folkdance not going ahead this session. Winter session programs to be finalized by end of October.
– 2 basketball teams formed, one co-ed spuds and one girls mini. Games start this coming weekend.
– 2 soccer teams, one U7 and one U9.
– equipment for soccer and basketball is out to teams. May need new jerseys in the spring, depending on enrolment.
– rink snowblower needs servicing, will be taken in soon. There will be a work session at the rink this Saturday at 2PM to clear the rink of weeds and ready it for winter flooding. Need a new hose to fit around school portables. Need to contact rink board advertisers to renew board contracts.
– deadline for newsletter articles is Nov. 19 (next board meeting).
– community garden had last meeting of the year last week. Small surplus in finances. Compost was dealt with easier this year by using large City supplied containers.
– proposed regulation changes to allow underground parking under front yards of multiplexes – excavation and construction may damage trees.
– College Corridor plan: concern with plan to remove green space between housing and College Drive. Leave feedback on City site before plan goes to Council in November.
– infill group recommendations to remove or change side wall rule and site coverage may result in bigger houses but not more houses and lessen green space. Public consultation coming later in October.

Next meeting is Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 7PM in Brunskill School library. The general public is always welcome to attend.

September 2025 board meeting

Overview of discussions at the Wednesday September 17, 2025 VVCA board meeting:

– VVCA has applied for a City WinterCity micro-grant for a winter skating and hot chocolate event in January.
– Unfortunately no Parks representative was able to attend the meeting to discuss the trees in President Murray Park. Councillor Parker stated that ~70 trees were in decline or dead and therefore removed. Cause was likely drought and extreme heat. There is a plan to replant more diverse species, but questions remain about budget and timeline. VVCA may be interested in partnering with City (and possibly Patterson Gardens) to replant some of park. Question whether they will be grinding the (approx 8″ high) stumps?
– A tent was spotted in President Murray Park this week. Fire department is responsible for dealing with homeless encampments. Fire department has 48hr response time due to backlog of cases. Email seems to be a good option for reporting – send a photo with location.
– tree planting at 14th Street: money spent on refilling water tanks and tree wraps. Trees doing well. More wood chips needed and some will be provided from excess at the community garden. Tree Canada event later in September will be planting more trees east of our location.
– upcoming Open Houses on USask Properties development south of Merlis Belsher Place: Sept 22 and Oct. 1.
– City survey open on the 2026-29 Strategic Plan. Please review. Accessibility plan survey is also open until Sept. 22. Review of VVCA bylaws to come. VVCA has paid the school invoice for rink electricity use.
– all programs are running.
– basketball registration information to come soon from SMBA. After that, teams and schedules will be set up.
– two teams registered for indoor soccer. May have a practice-only format for U5 soccer, waiting for registration results to confirm.
– VVCA asked if association can groom cross-country ski trails independently. No, only City can do it.
– rink snowblower needs to be serviced. Need a work-bee to clear rink, fix some boards and ready it for winter. Need to renew contracts with advertisers and replace any damaged signs.
– winter newsletter deadline is December 1. May only need 2000 copies printed next time as there were extras left over from door to door deliveries.
– Albert Community Centre is being renovated. Schedule may be a little behind, which can be expected when doing work on an old building. ACC is accommodating long-tern tenants during the construction, which means few or little outside bookings.
– website moved to new server, complete with SSL.
– community garden had 124 plots, with about 80-90 families or groups participating. Fall clean up coming this Saturday.
– some concerns about new sidewalks that have curb cuts for driveways – tend to accumulate snow and ice in winter, making them awkward for walking. President prefers newer style (suburbs) sidewalks with rounded curbs. Discussion in future.
– Next meeting is Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

June 2025 board meeting

– VVCA 40th Anniversary Celebrations – final preparations for event on Saturday June 14.
– committee formed to update bylaws, etc.
– receive and approve the 2024 financial statements.
– fall program registration will be Thursday September 4 and Tuesday September 9, 2025.
– leftover drinks and candy from SUM Theatre event will be sold at 40th Anniversary event.
– Albert Community Centre tender process is complete and a company has been selected to begin construction. Details still being finalized.
– some vandalism to one of the signs at the Brunskill rink. Also someone ransacked VVCA equipment at the school.
– VVCA social date set.
– next meeting, Wednesday, August 20. Location to be determined.

May 2025 board meeting

Overview of some of the discussions at the May 21, 2025 VVCA regular board meeting:

– SUM Theatre in the Park was fun, although cold evening. VVCA sold popcorn, candy bags and cold drinks. SUM talked up VVCA and the 40th Anniversary event – thank you! Not any take up by attendees for 40th flyers or volunteer list.

– water tanks filled at tree planting area on 14th Street. One tank leaked and will be refilled when the other is also empty. Volunteers will be contacted to help spread mulch. A temporary sign has been ordered. Rabbits ate the spruce trees’ bark – trees will need replacing.

– College drive Link (bus rapid transit) plans discussed. Construction on Link platforms to begin this year.

– Jon attended Saskatoon infill housing discussion. City wants to increase infill housing in area.

– Munroe Avenue bikeway planned from 14th Street to College. Speed drop to 30kmh. Josh will attend meeting on Monday.

– Albert Rec Unit park (Clarence and 13th Street) grand opening event on Sunday June 15, 1-5pm. Hosted by Nutana Community Association.

– VVCA offered baby grand piano by generous local resident. Will contact Brunskill School, Albert Community Centre, others to see if interested.

– portables installed on back of Brunskill School. May need a longer hose to flood the rink next winter.

– spring programs going well. Kinder soccer program going ahead in President Murray park. Fall registration dates will be September 4 and 9.

– Brunskill School community council hosting Movie in the Schoolyard (Dogman) on Wednesday June 4. VVCA will contribute funds.

– 70 trees scheduled to be cut down in President Murray Park. Trees don’t get watered and many are dead or dying. VVCA to ask City urban forestry and/or parks to speak at future meeting about plans for park.

– Community cleanup went well. 4 bins taken away, 3420kg of waste.

– newsletter deadline July 1. Distributed end of August before September long weekend.

April 2025 board meeting

Overview of some of the discussions at the April 16, 2025 VVCA board meeting that followed the AGM:

– thanks to Matthew Wiens for his term as President over the last two years
– Councillors report: homeless shelter downtown on Pacific Ave opened recently, although it is only a temporary (18 month) solution. Four possible permanent sites are being considered within the City, and negotiations are happening with the province to narrow down to one location. Public engagement will follow.
– comments about property crime in neighbourhood. Issues with Colonial Hotel on 8th Street?
– possibly a recent cycling death on Clarence Avenue?
– SUM Theatre performing Thursday May 15, 7PM, Grosvenor Park. New play is “Breathe” and free to attend. Need volunteers to deliver flyers. VVCA will sell snacks and drinks before the show.
– Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 3, 8am – 1pm. Bins will be located at Church of Latter-Day Saints parking lot (Cumberland and 10th Street). Need volunteers and trucks!
– invoice for ski trail grooming should come mid-April. Question whether there were third-parties available to groom President Murray Park next year.
– Year 2 of 14th Street tree planting area: spruce had bark stripped by rabbits and may not survive, replacement plan needed; new mulch likely mid-May; costing signage; projecting three water bin fills this year; budget submitted.
– 4 outdoor soccer teams registered, 8 volunteer coaches. Season starts in May. Schedule just released by SYSI.
– spring programs on the go: Badminton, Tae kwon do, Intermediate Spanish, Yoga. New location for program supplies and equipment.
– rink done for the season. Have to spray weeds in the rink area.
– Albert Community Centre renovation tenders should close April 17. Renovations may cause issues with rentals. Currently no permanent City rep on ACC board.

Overview of discussions at Wednesday March 19, 2025 board meeting:

– presentation by USask Properties regarding development of Stadium Square land, south of Merlis Belsher Place. Mixed-use, medium-density housing, walkable, encouraging very little vehicle use. Likely higher-density, 4-6 stories, from perimeter.
– VVCA got partial grant to help cover some of the expenses of 40th anniversary event.
– August newsletter deadline, July 1. To be distributed late August.
– Community Cleanup Saturday May 3. Volunteers needed, and trucks and trailers. Location yet to be confirmed.
– SUM Theatre Thursday May 15, Grosvenor Park. VVCA possibly selling popcorn and hot chocolate. Good opportunity to promote 40th anniversary event.
– Annual General Meeting is Wednesday April 16. What board positions will be open?
– VVCA 40th Anniversary event. Need volunteers for the day. Helpful to have a list with time slots and categories. Donors or sponsors also wanted. She’s working with school to distribute information.

Saskatoon International Education, the international student program with Saskatoon Public Schools, are looking to recruit host families for our program. Host families provide a home for an international student during their time studying in a Saskatoon Public Schools high school. We pay families a monthly stipend of $1000+ per month to host the student to cover the costs of feeding and housing them.

We are looking for families who would enjoy the experience of learning from someone from another country while sharing the amazing opportunities our Saskatoon communities offer. This is a great way for members of your community to have an amazing cultural experience, all while earning some extra money on the side.

1. we are looking for short term homes for Japanese students coming for one month and,

2. we are looking for general hosts who would host our typical students who come to us for 3 month, 4 month, 1 semester and full year terms.
