Seniors Globe Walk

The Seniors Globe Walk was created to provide older adults more physical activity and social opportunitiesand help motivate those 50 years and older to stay active during the winter months when it is most difficult.

From January 9, 2017 until April 27, 2017 teams MOTIVATE each other to walk the equivalent distance of over 500,000 miles in our SPACE STATION ORBITING TOUR (this year’s theme). Participants can stroll or roll, hike or bike, swim or gym; all forms of physical activity count. Each half hour of physical activity counts as one mile. The Globe Walk inspires all 50+ adults to stay active and work with their team to achieve this awesome goal! In 2016, 77 teams with 2486 members (aged 50 to 100) logged 437,069 miles. This year we want to increase both our members and our mileage.

Please consider being a Captain for Globe Walk this year or finding someone in your community who might be able to do this. It’s fun for participants, super easy to join and it’s free! There are even opportunities to walk the track at the Saskatoon Field House or the Martensville Athletic Pavilion. We also have wonderful social events throughout the winter months to keep participants motivated. No team – no problem! Just contact me and I will put your name on a SCOA team.

January 9 – Captain’s Launch (Saskatoon Field House)
February 20 – Forestry Farm Family Walk
March 17 – St Patrick’s Day Walk
April 12 – Surprise Event (Details to follow)
May 10 – Celebration Lunch at WDM

This is a great opportunity to inspire your parents, grandparents, neighbours, your community (and yourselves if you are over 50) to stay fit and healthy as they age.

For more information on how to join or captain a team please visit our website at www.scoa.ca/globewalk or contact Beth at 306-652-0027 or globewalk@scoa.ca.

National Health & Fitness Day

National Health & Fitness Day is Saturday, June 4th
National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD) is an initiative to make Canada the Fittest Nation on Earth, starting with marking one day, the first Saturday in June as the day when Canadians get out and get active in any way they wish.
Over the last few years, MP John Weston has worked with Senator Nancy Greene Raine to involve the 338 MPs and the 100 Senators to encourage cities and towns across the country to proclaim the day and mark it with local events. Hundreds of communities have already proclaimed the day and the National Health and Fitness Day Act, Bill S-211, became law in December 2014!

Terry Fox Marathon of Hope

September 20, 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. 35 years ago, Terry achieved his goal to raise $1 for every Canadian. On the 35th Anniversary of The Marathon of Hope, and with 35 million people in Canada, it is possible to raise $35 million for cancer research. Help us raise $1 for every person in your community.

Saskatchewan has tremendous supporters across the province and is expecting to have around 60 communities and 570 schools participating in the Terry Fox run in 2015. Our supporters make us proud in their selfless dedication by sharing the gift of hope year after year.
