14th Street Permanent Closure

The City of Saskatoon is undertaking the design of the permanent closure of 14th Street East
between Lansdowne Avenue and Temperance Street. This connection was recommended for
closure through the Nutana Neighbourhood Traffic Review which was conducted in 2014 and
adopted by Council in May 2015. The closure was installed temporarily in 2016. The permanent
closure has been approved by City Council.

Thank you to everyone that has provided input so far. We received your feedback via the design
charrette (September 2017), and multiple stakeholder working group meetings (Spring and
Summer 2018). We considered all of the concerns and feedback as we developed designs for
the permanent closure options.

The proposed design for the 14th Street permanent closure has been posted to Saskatoon.ca/ntr and will be discussed at the Teams Live meeting. We would appreciate the opportunity to get your thoughts on the design. There are two ways to participate and provide us with your feedback:

Neighbourhood Bikeways Project

The City is committed to promoting active transportation and providing transportation choices that are safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities year-round.

The Neighbourhood Bikeways Project was initiated in February 2020 to help identify measures to provide more travel choices and improve safety, accessibility and connectivity. The project included the evaluation and design of walking and cycling facility improvements for 14th Street, from Saskatchewan Crescent to Cumberland Avenue.

Thank you to everyone that has provided input so far. We received your feedback via Saskatoon.ca/engage, email, phone calls and in-person at the first meeting held on March 4, 2020.

We considered all of the concerns and feedback as we developed designs for the study area corridors. Information from the first round of engagement can be found at Saskatoon.ca/engage

AAA Downtown Cycling Network

The City of Saskatoon is inviting Saskatoon residents to learn more about the development of an All Ages & Abilities (AAA) Downtown Cycling Network. This network has been in development since fall 2017 when the Downtown Protected Bike Lane Demonstration concluded. AAA cycling facilities physically separate people riding bikes from drivers, thereby increasing the comfort and safety of all cyclists.

The network plan considers the following:
– Connection to Saskatoon’s wider cycling network;
– Integration with other key downtown projects such as Bus Rapid Transit and the re-opening of Traffic Bridge;
– Impacts to all users in the downtown in identifying the most appropriate streets to host AAA facilities.

Information about the AAA Downtown Cycling Network will be available as part of a larger forum on topics related to future growth: Plan for Growth Community Open House Wednesday, March 7, 2018 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Western Development Museum

#GetMyBikeBack

The Saskatoon Police Service would like to remind citizens of the importance of record-ing serial numbers, specifically bicycles, in order to claim lost or stolen property that has been recovered by Police through an awareness campaign called #GetMyBikeBack.

Through the #GetMyBikeBack awareness campaign, Police are encouraging people to take a picture of the serial number for their records. In the event the bike is stolen and recovered, Police will then be able to return the bicycle to its rightful owner.

“These days, everyone has their phone either on them or within reach, so we’re encouraging people to snap a quick photo of the bike’s serial number,” says East Di-vision Inspector, Patrick Nogier. “It’s an easy and convenient way to keep a record so that in the event your bike is stolen, that serial number is easily accessible to provide to Police.”

Police are also working with local cycling businesses to encourage persons purchasing bicycles to take a picture of the serial number before they leave the stores.

Bike theft continues to be a problem in Saskatoon and is often linked to residential Break & Enters and Possession of Stolen Property.

The bicycles that are recovered but un-claimed are auctioned off at various times throughout the year. Last year there were over 550 bicycles that were recovered by Police that went to auction.
