The 5th Wîcihitowin Indigenous Engagement Conference invites community organizations, governments and businesses to learn about inclusive representation of Indigenous people as employees, volunteers and decision makers. Within the context of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, if you’re working towards respectful Indigenous engagement and inclusion in a community-based setting, this conference is for you. Bike thefts

A Message from the Saskatoon Police Service:

Bicycles, sports equipment, as well as tools are being stolen out of vehicles and outbuildings (detached garages, sheds). Saskatoon Police are noticing that the people responsible for the thefts are either wandering around your neighborhood at night checking door handles of vehicles, and buildings. If any vehicles or buildings is found to be unlocked, these people help themselves to whatever property they can get ahold of.

Saskatoon Police Services are requesting that if you have anything of value, anything you don’t want stolen, please take it into your homes. If you have bikes, please lock the bike up with the appropriate bike locks, and then please lock the garage or outbuildings you have it stored in.

The Police have laminated signs, “All Valuables Removed” that you can pick up from Saskatoon Police Service. They are used to place in your vehicle to deter people breaking in.

We are all responsible for the security of our homes, and property, and working together we can prevent crime.

Race Against Racism

9th Annual Fun Run/Walk and Cultural Expo

The Race Against Racism (RAR) got its start in 2011 with one goal; to provide a positive environment for people of all backgrounds to gather and promote an active, healthy lifestyle while encouraging positive police community relations. Runners, walkers and rollers have the choice to participate in the 2.5km, 5km, or 10km.

Members from five settlement agencies (Saskatoon Open Door Society, The Global Gathering Place, International Women of Saskatoon, Newcomer Information Centre and Saskatchewan Intercultural Association), are part of RAR’s planning committee. Those agencies collect and divide the funds raised from the event to help continue local programming. A joint fundraiser called “Cram the Cruiser” is also tied to the Race. All entrants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to help fill a patrol car to donate to the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre.

The City of Saskatoon’s Cultural Diversity and Race Relations Committee have been key partners from the beginning. Our partners at Brainsport will be hosting the race.

The Race includes an expo beyond the finish line called “Around the World – A Cultural Expo.” It showcases ethnic displays from local groups to promote community engagement and to celebrate diversity.

The Annual Race Against Racism brings together individuals from all over Saskatoon from various communities, with unique backgrounds, religions, cultures, sexual orientations, ages and ethnicities. Everyone comes together to achieve a common goal; to provide a positive, safe environment to live in harmony and show that Saskatoon will not accept racism.

A Thinker’s Tea Party!

The Refinery is launching something new this fall, we hope that you can join us for A Thinker’s Tea Party!

A Thinker’s Tea Party is a community lecture series meant to gather community, offer an opportunity for us to broaden our understanding of wonderfully interesting topics, share tea and conversation.

The Refinery launches this initiative with ‘What is Islam?’ with Fachrizal Halim on Tuesday, September 17th, starting at 7:00 p.m. The Refinery is located at 609 Dufferin Avenue, at the corner of 12th Street East and Dufferin.

Small but Mighty 5th Annual Gold Walk

Saturday, September 7 at 11:00am at Ecole Canadienne Francaise School.

Wear your yellow and gold and walk with us to spread awareness of childhood cancers! We walk rain or shine!
BBQ at 11:00. Walk promptly at 12:30.
Location: 2320 Louise Ave in Saskatoon. It’s at École Canadienne Francaise – Pavillon Gustave Dubois.
This event happens rain or shine! Please dress appropriately for the walk!

🌭 FREE hotdog BBQ starts at 11:00! It will wrap up at 12:15 so we can organize for the walk. If there are hotdogs left to cook, the BBQ will likely start up again after the speech part of the event.

PARKING: There is a very small parking lot at the school, as well as residential parking in the surrounding area. Market Mall is just a short walk away and has plenty of parking as well. Please be respectful to our neighbours and do not walk on lawns, or block driveways.

♻️ Silver for Gold will be onsite to take your tab donations! You can find them at the back corner of the gym. This year they will also have a fun station set up where kids can help paint some collection bins to be used for tab donations throughout the province.

The walk is approximately 2km long and is wheelchair accessible (as is our venue). Most of the intersections we cross have traffic lights – please obey them! There are two intersections near the condos on Preston that do not have traffic lights. As a common courtesy, we ask that participants stop to let traffic through when it is obvious that vehicles are trying to get in or out of these driveways. We will all meet at the vacant lot across from the Petro-Canada before heading back to the school, so we will all be back together then! The walk starts PROMPTLY at 12:30 from the school.

🖼Posters will be handed out randomly for participants to carry during the walk. There will be NO REQUESTS taken for specific posters. In the past, this has had us with some children’s posters “left out” when the walk begins. We hope that by handing out the posters at random, folks will learn new names and faces and develop a stronger appreciation for why we do what we do. Posters will be handed out at the door on the way out,and must be returned at the door on the way back in. Posters are property of Small But Mighty SK.

The DONATION and TICKETS SALES tables will be up and running at 11:00 am when the BBQ starts. Please note that ticketed activities will not start until after the speeches (approx 2:30pm) but get your tickets early so that you can avoid a lineup! Bake sale table will open from 12:00-12:20 for any treats you want before the walk!

🗣 The brief formal program happens right after the walk. Please gather in the gymnasium. This is an important time to connect with, celebrate, and honour our SK pediatric oncology community. Bring tissues.

✔️Silent Auction payments can be made by cash, cheque, or etransfer. The silent auction will close at 3:45. ❗️All bid sheets will be gathered by a volunteer after the auction closes and brought to a central location. From there, please find your winning bid sheet and bring it to the payment table. Once you have paid, bring your sheet to the volunteers at the item area to pick up your item(s). ❗️ You do not need to be present to claim your item. We will contact you to arrange payment and pick up. Should there be any leftover items, an online auction will be held on this page in the week following the Gold Walk.

Now in its 20th year, Spotlight on Seniors is a one stop show for active aging for baby boomers, older adults and caregivers.

Over 70 exhibits provide information on healthcare, housing, recreation, travel and finances. Enjoy non-stop entertainment and activity with Bridge City Cloggers, Free Flow Dance Studio, fitness demos with Forever in motion, urban poling and much more!

Chalk Mural Record

Have you heard?! On August 31st 2019, Meewasin is attempting to make history by setting a new world record for the longest chalk mural right in Saskatoon on the Meewasin Trails, and we need your help!

In order to break the world record, the whole mural must reflect a ‘Meewasin Valley’ theme. This can include anything relating to the natural world (plants, animals, insects, weather) or to things you see around the trails (the Bessborough, buildings, etc.) will count!

We are getting participants to register so we can ensure there are enough people at each of the stations. There is no experience necessary to be a chalker, which you can register for here. 

We are also looking for volunteer coordinators to help with getting the chalkers set up. You can register to volunteer here.

This will be a fun community event, meant to bring people to the outdoors, and to work together to accomplish breaking a record while creating beautiful art on the trails!

Little Stone Schoolhouse Open House

From August 8th-10th, the Little Stone Schoolhouse will open its doors to visitors! Come visit and admire Saskatoon’s first public schoolhouse. The Little Stone Schoolhouse will be open from 1-4 pm each day with staff on hand to answer any questions and provide context to the building’s rich history.

Located just off College Drive (use the Hospital Drive turnoff) on the University of Saskatchewan.
