Snowlandia: A Winter Week for Young Women

Leap on snowshoes, search for life under the snow, develop leadership skills and make outdoorsy friends. SaskOutdoors and Wildernook are teaming up to offer winter experiences in a fresh way.

Snowlandia is designed for young women ages 10 -12 who crave more outdoor time exploring and creating with friends. It is an exciting opportunity for young women to be active outdoors during the winter break.

Play like a Girl

The City of Saskatoon’s Recreation and Community Development Division, in partnership with Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan, Sask Sport Inc., and Women in Sport – Physical Activity and Recreation, will be hosting Play Like a Girl on Sunday, September 10, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SaskTel Sports Centre (150 Nelson Road). Registrations are still being accepted for this free one-day event for girls, ages 10 to 14.

Test your agility and experience the sports of football, wrestling, and wheelchair basketball with world class athletes and coaches who will lead the day.

Agility with Anastasia Bucsis
Two-time Olympian – Speed Skating
Anastasia competed at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games in Women’s Long Track 500 metres.

Football with Team Canada – Members of the Saskatoon Valkyries
Team Canada – Silver Medalists, 2017 International Federation of American Football Women’s World Championships

Wrestling with Jillian Gallays
Olympian – 53 kg Freestyle Wrestling
Jillian competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
In 2014, she placed 3rd at the World Championships.

Wheelchair Basketball with Paralympic Coach Katie Miyazaki
Katie Miyazaki was an Assistant Coach for Team Canada at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

MIRROR MIRROR Community Event
Thursday, March 2nd at Elim Church (419 Slimmon Rd), 6:30-8:00 pm

This event is geared towards girls ages 10-18, but all women are welcome to attend! Girls ages 10-18 will be gifted the book Mirror Mirror. They will also be given the opportunity to sign up for a free six week Mirror Mirror course that corresponds with the content of the book.

Mirror Mirror YXE aims to provide practical tools and education for girls to gain confidence and freedom from low self-esteem. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to purchase Dianne’s Wilson’s book, Mirror Mirror, for Saskatoon High School girls and offer them a follow up course.

Girls in Motion

Registration is now open for Girls in Motion – a free event being hosted by the City of Saskatoon, for female youth ages 10 to 14. Event takes place on Monday, November 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Shaw Centre (122 Bowlt Crescent)

A day for girls to become inspired to live a healthy, happy lifestyle and enjoy physical activities. This year’s activities include both aquatic sports and dryland activities and an opportunity to learn water safety skills. Girls can either have Swim Kids 5 or will be provided with a life jacket to wear for water activities. Space is limited.

Agility with Helen Upperton
Olympic Silver Medalist – Bobsleigh
Helen Upperton won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics after previously finishing fourth in the two-woman event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Judo with Amy Cotton
Two-time Olympian
Amy Cotton won the bronze medal in the women’s half heavyweight division at the 2003 Pan American Games. She represented Canada at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.

Fencing with Kirsten Van Marion
Kirsten Van Marion has been fencing for nine years and fences out of the Asquith Garde Fencing Association. Kirsten has fenced with the junior national team and as a notable opponent in Junior Women’s Epee.

Sledge Hockey with Jessica Frotten
Jessica Frotten won two bronze medals at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, Ontario.

Girls Flag Football Camp

This learn to flag football camp is offered to girls in grade 5, 6, 7 or 8 interested in learning football skills and fundamentals. We have lots of great coaches with both flag and tackle experience who will lead the drills in a progressive, fun and safe manner. We want to create a positive learning experience instilling a passion and love for the game. No football experience is needed just a pair of cleats, running shoes, and a willingness to have fun!

Huskie Basketball Skills Camp

Skills and Drills with the Huskies!

Along with the City of Saskatoon, the U of S Women’s Huskies Basketball team will be leading a FREE basketball skills camp at the Saskatoon Indian and Metis Friendship Centre at 168 Wall Street on Sunday, November 22nd from 1:00 – 2:30 pm for girls 9 – 13.

International Day of the Girl

Saskatoon IDG is thrilled to announce this opportunity for you to support the girls in your life by celebrating International Day of the Girl with them this year!

We are very pleased to announce that home-grown media maven and passionate community leader, Trish Cheveldayoff, will be hosting our 3rd annual celebration of International Day of the Girl Saskatoon. The event will take place on Saturday, October 17 at Georges Vanier School, which is located at 820 Wilson Crescent. All proceeds raised will go to support youth empowerment initiatives at the Core Youth Neighbourhood Co-Op in Saskatoon.

We are starting at 1pm with MissRepresentation – Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s first film exposes how mainstream media contributes to girls and women being silenced, sexualized and stereotyped. Come and see media in a new way! (www.therepresentationproject.org)

At 3pm, attendees will be invited to participate with local artist and art educator, Monique Martin, as we explore the part we play in the puzzle of humanity (www.moniqueart.com). Come and discover what we create!

The day will wrap up with a powerful panel discussion around the actions we can take, collectively and individually, to challenge the stereotypes that negatively impact the lives girls, women, boys and men. Come and find out what you can do! Confirmed panelists include:

“Like A Girl” Event

The City of Saskatoon has partnered with SaskSport and Women in Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation to present another “Like A Girl” Event for young women between 10 – 14. This event will take place at the SaskTel Soccer Centre on Sunday, September 14th with registration at 12 Noon and the event running from 12:25 – 5:00 pm.

Special facilitators and sports being presented are as follows:

Heather Moyse – Rugby
A multi-sport athlete with accomplishments including Bobsleigh Olympic gold medalist (2010, 2014); Rugby Sevens World Cup silver medalist (2013); 4th in match sprint at PamAm Track Cycling Championships (2012).

Shannon Comerford – Fencing
A member of the Canadian Women’s Foil Senior National Team who has earned silver medals at the Pan American Championships (2009 to present).

Ashley Olynick- Golf
A member of PGA of Canada and a certified personal coach at GolfTec. She played collegiate golf at Texas A&M University Corpus-Christi and was player of the year in 2009.

Miranda Biletski – Wheelchair Rugby
A member of Team Canada who has achieved a bronze medal at the American Zonals (2009), silver medal at Four Nations (2010), 5th place World Championships (2010), bronze medal at World Challenge (2013) and silver medal at America’s Zonals (2013).
