Neighbourhood Bikeways Project

The City is committed to promoting active transportation and providing transportation choices that are safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities year-round.

The Neighbourhood Bikeways Project was initiated in February 2020 to help identify measures to provide more travel choices and improve safety, accessibility and connectivity. The project included the evaluation and design of walking and cycling facility improvements for 14th Street, from Saskatchewan Crescent to Cumberland Avenue.

Thank you to everyone that has provided input so far. We received your feedback via Saskatoon.ca/engage, email, phone calls and in-person at the first meeting held on March 4, 2020.

We considered all of the concerns and feedback as we developed designs for the study area corridors. Information from the first round of engagement can be found at Saskatoon.ca/engage

The proposed design for 14th Street will be discussed at the Teams Live meeting and posted to Saskatoon.ca/engage after the meeting date. We would appreciate the opportunity to get your thoughts on our draft design. There are two ways to participate and provide us with your feedback:

2018 Saskatchewan Families Photo Contest

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is a non-profit organization with a focus on reducing the occurrence of disabling conditions in children. We are committed to working collaboratively to promote primary prevention throughout the province. We share evidence-based information through print and web-based resources. We provide education and training on all of our areas of focus.

Our programs and areas of focus include: Child Injury Prevention, Child Traffic Safety, Community Action Program for Children (CAPC), Early Childhood Mental Health, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Prevention, Youth Action for Prevention, Maternal and Infant Health, Nobody’s Perfect Parenting, and Sexual and Reproductive Health.

As part of our ongoing education and resource creation, we are holding a 2018 Saskatchewan Families Photo Contest!

The purpose of the photo contest is to create a calendar that represents a diverse group of families from Saskatchewan and provide us with photos to use in our future resources. The Garden Patch

The Garden Patch is a community-driven urban agriculture initiative. Our mission is to grow nutritious produce for distribution in emergency food baskets at the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre’s (SFBLC). Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we harvested 17,825 lbs of fresh produce in 2017.

Open May 1st to Sept 29th
Hours: Tuesday: 10 am – 3 pm, Wednesday: 3 pm – 8 pm, Thursday: 10 am – 3 pm, Saturday: 12 pm – 4 pm
Location: 900 Block of 3rd Ave North, between Duke and Duchess Streets

In order to have another successful year, we need volunteers! To become a volunteer at the Garden Patch:

1. Drop-in when you are free! Each week we have scheduled volunteer drop-in hours. You do not have to register in advance, simply stop by! If you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer you will be provided with a 20-minute orientation that includes information about safety, expectations, and opportunities.

2. Plan a morning or afternoon of volunteering for your group, organization or business! To book your volunteer date, email:garden.patch@saskatoonfoodbank.org

There are no costs associated with any of these volunteer opportunities and you don’t need to have any gardening experience to help out!! In addition to all of the necessary tools we provide support and instruction!

Individuals who volunteer for more than 30 hours are eligible to receive a volunteer reference from a staff member. Therefore, volunteering at the Garden Patch is an excellent opportunity to build a resume and gain valuable work experience.

Your Family History: Finding and Assembling the Pieces
April 20 – 22, 2018

The Saskatoon Branch, Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SBSGS) has opened the registration for Your Family History: Finding and Assembling the Pieces. This is the first genealogy conference to take place in Saskatoon since 2011.The SBSGS will host this weekend long event at the Park Town Hotel by bringing in speakers from across western Canada.

Participants will get to choose from sessions designed to provide them with new tools in as they research their family’s history. Early bird deadline is March 20, 2018 with only 150 spots available.

Redesigning Curbside Waste

Redesigning Curbside Waste

To help the City move towards 70% Waste Diversion by 2023, the City is in the process of redesigning Curbside Waste Collection and it needs your input. This work will help design a city-wide organics program, make appropriate modifications to capacity and frequency, and unify costs for waste management under a waste utility.

Saskatoon Talks Trash – Curbside
The City of Saskatoon is reviewing curbside collection for single family homes and we need your input. Beginning on February 12, 2018 there will be a series of public engagement opportunities to look at the priorities, preferences and any barriers that might impact a redesigned curbside waste collection system.

Please note that this phase of engagement is intended for residents with curbside collection (front street or back alley pick-up). Engagement for residents in the multi-unit collection program will take place in Spring 2018 – stay tuned!

Everything is on the table, including curbside organics, recycling, waste, cart sizes, collection frequency, funding model, and depots/other services.

Online Survey and Pop-up Engagements: Complete the online survey or attend a pop-up engagement. Both activities cover a parallel series of questions to understand your experiences, explore preferences and generate ideas to help the City reach 70% waste diversion by 2023.

Online Survey: The survey will be available from February 12th to March 4th at www.saskatoon.ca/yxetalkstrash and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Pop-up Engagements: Participate in a 5-10 minute activity facilitated by City staff at one of the following come-and-go style events.

Accessibility Waste Collection Workshop: This invite-only workshop is for stakeholders or organizations that serve or represent older adults and/or other residents who are physically challenged by the task of managing a waste cart. Sensemaking Saturday: This interactive half-day workshop will discuss the engagement results and proposed recommendations. When completing the online survey or attending a pop up event or workshop you will be given the chance to opt-in for a chance to be randomly selected to attend this event.

Social Media: “We’re Talking Trash Saskatoon” ads and posts will be occurring throughout the campaign. Follow the City on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to receive updates. All social media comments will be included in the engagement results.

Jane’s Walk 2018 – volunteers

Do you have a favorite spot that tells a story about Saskatoon – perhaps about your own neighbourhood?

Jane’s Walk, the 1st weekend in May 2018, is making the call out for walk leaders. A typical walk takes about an hour and is free. This event, now in 212 cities, is inspired by the life of Jane Jacobs, a writer, and urban activist who championed the voices of everyday people in city-building.

The Big Shred 2018

On Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 9 am – 12 noon, bring your old paper to the 5th annual ‘Big Shred’ in the parking lot of McClure United Church at 4025 Taylor St. (at McKercher)!

Protect against personal identity theft as your old documents go into the Shred-It company truck’s shredders! Quickly destroy old bank and utility statements, tax returns (2011 and earlier), old files, outdated documents, etc.

The service is by donation (suggested $10 per paper box, or $5 per shopping bag) to assist the McClure Place Foundation in paying down the mortgage at Amy McClure House. Protect your family by removing that unwanted … yet personal paper!

(Note: In 2017, more than 15,000 pounds of paper was safely shredded in three hours!)
