Spring can often mean that it is graffiti season. Rinks are often a target for Graffiti. If you experience graffiti please follow these steps:
Record It – Take a picture of the graffiti vandalism as soon as it is identified.
Report It – Report all incidents of damage to your property by calling Saskatoon Police Service at 975-8300.
Remove It – Remove graffiti from your property as quickly as possible. The faster and more frequently graffiti is cleaned up, the less it reappears.

What can I do if I see graffiti on someone else’s property?
To report graffiti vandalism on property other than your own call 975-2828.

At a Curbside Swap, you place unwanted items in good condition on your property (next to the sidewalk or curb) and mark them as FREE for anyone to pick-up. You can also search for free items for your own household! At the end of your Swap day, return your unclaimed items to your home along with your own newfound treasures.

Plan a Curbside Swap for your household or your neighbourhood this summer! Post your Swap on the Curbside Swap Facebook Event page at Saskatoon City News and share it with your friends. And join in the city-wide Curbside Swap on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

Have clean, usable stuff to give away? Want free stuff? Plan your own Curbside Swap or participate in the city-wide Swap on September 9, 2017!

The Saskatoon Curbside Swap program is a series of community-organized events where residents place unwanted items in good condition – clearly marked FREE – on their curbs for anyone to pick up. At the end of the Swap day, residents return unclaimed items to their home along with their newfound treasures.

Giving used items a new home keeps them out of our landfill and swapping helps to build a sense of community. It’s a fun and environmentally friendly way to get rid of unwanted (but usable) items and to find free stuff!

To get started with organizing a community-wide swap, contact your Community Association. To help swap organizers promote their events, the City provides downloadable promotional postcards, posters and ‘free stuff’ signs. Promote your event and share your information with your friends on the 2017 Curbside Swap Facebook Event page at Saskatoon City News.

Saskatoon Police Services Community Night

Saskatoon City Police are hosting a Community Night on June 14, 2017. Last year Saskatoon Police Services hosted 3 of them (one for each division), but attendance wasn’t great. This year SPS is hosting one larger event to allow residents to interact with the Police force.

Summer spray pads open

Summer Spray Pads Open Thursday, June 1, 2017

Cool off this summer at any of the 17 City of Saskatoon spray pads located in various locations around the city. Summer spray pads will open for the season on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 10 a.m., and will be operational daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please note, spray pad sites located on or near school grounds have timers and are set to turn spray features off during recess and lunch breaks. Shut-off times will vary according to individual school schedules. All spray pads are activated by push buttons located near the spray features.

Street Sweeping

As soon as the roads are dry in early spring, the City begins a spring sweeping blitz to remove heavier dirt and debris that gathers over the winter. In May, yellow No Parking signs are posted on scheduled streets to notify drivers of upcoming curb-to-curb sweeping through residential neighbourhoods.

What to expect:
– Street sweeping will occur on high-traffic and arterial streets in April, going around parked vehicles, in order to collect as much road debris from as many streets as possible (see Street Sweeping Blitz below).
– City-wide residential sweeping begins on May 8 on streets posted with yellow “No Parking” signs (see Street Sweeping Interactive Map).
– School Zones will be swept during the daytime as part of the scheduled neighbourhood (see School Zones below).
– As a pilot this year, the Priority Streets in seven neighbourhoods will be posted for No Parking and swept curb-to-curb ahead of their neighbourhood schedule. These streets will be available for on-street parking in May and June when adjacent streets are swept (A pilot study is underway in seven neighbourhoods as part of a plan to speed up street sweeping residential areas. For the first time, priority roads in Avalon, Dundonald, Greystone Heights/Grosvenor Park, Hudson Bay Park, Massey Place, North Park and Westview were swept curb-to-curb during the pre-sweep in April. With these streets now clean, residents can use them for on-street parking while residential areas are being swept).
– Business Improvement Districts are swept overnight between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of each month.
– Street Sweeping Service Alerts will be issued if there is a change to the schedule.

How to help:
– Watch for yellow No Parking signs beginning in May and remove your vehicle by 7 a.m. on the posted sweeping day to avoid a ticket and/or relocation to a nearby street. Check Find My Vehicle! if your vehicle is moved.
– Report locations where residents have illegally pushed excessive leaves onto the street to the Bylaw Inspector at 306-975-3193. City Bylaw Inspectors will investigate and violators may receive a fine.

When? Saturday, May 27, 2017
Where? Brunskill School, parking lot

VVCA Community Clean Up: Varsity View Community Association is holding a neighborhood clean up on the morning of May 27th.

There will be two bins in the parking lot of Brunskill school – one for metal and one for general trash from 10 am till noon. Residents are welcome to drop off trash by bringing it to the bins between these times. Volunteers and especially volunteers with trucks would be welcome to help clear up the back alleys.

For volunteers for general pick up there is an orientation session at 9:30 am in the east side of the parking lot of Brunskill School. If you have any questions, contact the VVCA President at president@vvcasaskatoon.com

Grosvenor Park Traffic Review Update

The Grosvenor Park Neighbourhood Traffic Review is now complete and will be going to the City Council meeting on April 24, 2017 for final approval.

Recommendation
That the Standing Policy Committee on Transportation recommend to City Council: That the Neighbourhood Traffic Review for the Grosvenor Park neighbourhood be adopted as the framework for future traffic improvements in the area, to be undertaken as funding is made available through the annual budget process.

Report Highlights
A Neighbourhood Traffic Plan for the Grosvenor Park neighbourhood was developed in consultation with the community in response to concerns such as speeding, traffic shortcutting, and pedestrian safety. The plan will be implemented over time as funding for the improvements is available.

Strategic Goal
This report supports the Strategic Goal of Moving Around by providing a plan to guide the installation of traffic calming devices and pedestrian safety enhancements to improve the safety of pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists.

Background
A public meeting was held in April 2016 to identify traffic concerns and potential solutions within the Grosvenor Park neighbourhood. Representatives from the Saskatoon Police Service were in attendance to address traffic enforcement issues. Based on the residents’ input provided at the initial public meeting and the analysis of the traffic data collected, a Neighbourhood Traffic Plan was developed and presented to the community at a second public meeting held in January 2017.

WINTER CITY STRATEGY COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

The City of Saskatoon invites all interested community members to help shape the creation of a Winter City Strategy for Saskatoon!

Over the winter, we asked the community how we could improve our:
– Winter Life: Celebrate what makes Saskatoon inviting and fun even in the coldest months of the year.
– Winter Design: Improve community accessibility for everyone, even in the ice and snow.
– Winter Culture: Build enthusiasm for the winter season and helping us take advantage of all the opportunities winter brings.
– Winter Economy: Address challenges associated with winter to create more vibrant and prosperous service, retail and accommodation sectors in the winter.

We received a ‘blizzard’ of great ideas and now it is time to shape these into a Strategy. Please join us in a discussion of priorities and ways to support new and existing initiatives.

The workshop will also feature presentations by City-sponsored delegates who attended the Edmonton Winter City Shake-Up Conference in February.

CORRIDOR PLANNING PROGRAM QUESTIONNAIRE

The City of Saskatoon is acting on the Growth Plan to Half a Million, starting with the core initiative of Corridor Growth.

Residents, Business Owners, and Community Leaders are invited to provide input on the development of the Corridor Planning Program.

This questionnaire should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

The Growth Plan explores ways to encourage growth and redevelopment near Saskatoon’s major corridors in order to reduce outward growth pressures, provide more housing options close to employment areas, and enhance transportation choices throughout the City. Residents have expressed a desire for sustainable growth options and a better balance of outward and upward growth. Corridor Growth is essential to transforming low-density, auto-centric land uses into vibrant, complete communities that support attractive transit. The Growth Plan identifies a shortlist of major corridors with greatest potential for redevelopment and supporting future Bus Rapid Transit. These corridors include portions of: 8th Street East, Preston Avenue, 22nd Street West and Idlywyld Drive North.

Due to the very warm weather the Cameco Family Day Skating Party has been changed to March 5, 2017

On SUNDAY MARCH 5, 2017 a free family skate day will be held at the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink in Kiwanis Memorial Park. The event will run from Noon-4 pm. Remember your skates and safety gear!

The City of Saskatoon Learn to Skate Program will be offered in 4 neighbourhoods this winter. The program is led by skating instructors. Participants must bring their own skates and CSA approved helmet.
