What park project next?

What park project do we tackle next?

VVCA is asking for community feedback and ideas on parks and facilities in the Varsity View and Grosvenor Park neighbourhoods. With the Raoul Wallenberg park enhancement nearly complete and Albert Rec Unit hopefully beginning construction in fall of 2019, our major initiatives are wrapping up.

So, what’s next? We have been thinking about Albert Oulton Park (corner of Cumberland Avenue and 12th Street/Garrison Crescent), or Cumberland Park (Cumberland Avenue and 8th Street), or continue to further enhance Raoul Wallenberg Park (Munroe Avenue and 10th Street).

Google map of neighbourhood

Are there other parks or areas that need some love and attention? What should we accomplish in these (or other) areas? More benches? Bicycle racks? Games tables? Exercise equipment? Public art? Something else?

Feel free to email your ideas to the VVCA President, or find us at any community function to discuss your thoughts. Come out to the VVCA Summer BBQ on June 2 2019 in Raoul Wallenberg Park and chat with us. We’d love to get your input!

Big Plans Update

Albert Recreation Unit – 13th Street and Clarence Avenue
Big Plans for a Little Park

Changes are scheduled to begin this fall as the City of Saskatoon will be replacing four of the play structures. Funding for this part of the park rehab is courtesy of a federal Canada 150 grant. This will improve the park on both the north and south sides of the fenceline with the removal of the extremely well-used wooden play structures.

Fundraising continues towards further redevelopment of the park. Through various grants, fundraising events, and donations from residents we have raised well over $100,000. Thank you to all those who have helped support our neighbourhood project. To donate please visit https://nutana.ca/about-our-fundraising-for-the-albert-rec-unit/ .

The scope of further improvements, primarily on the south side of the fence, will be dictated by the total funds raised by early 2018. These further improvements include many features including more equipment, green landscaping and contouring, new play features, a riding/running loop, a tiny toboggan hill and a 3 on 3 basketball court. The current timeline is to complete all phases of construction before 2018 splash pool season. Thank you to Jim Siemens (Oxbow Architecture) and Chris Popplewell (Strata Developments) for their professional assistance.

Albert Rec Unit: Big Plans Update

Thank you for your interest in, and support of, our Big Plans for the Albert Rec Unit park rejuvenation!

The City of Saskatoon has received Canada 150 funds to replace old play structures in seven parks across the City, with Albert Rec Unit being one of them. The City’s portion of this little park project – replacing some of the playground equipment – is due to be tendered early next year with construction tentatively slated for 2017.

Our plans are nearly done and we need funds in place this year so we can rejuvenate the remainder of the park at the same time – causing less disruption to the park and its users by constructing on the same schedule.

Now is the time to donate! We still need $120,000 by December 1 2016 to meet our goal!

Let’s make our little park a BIG success!

BUDGET:
Yet to be raised: $118 750
Community donations: $23 750
VVCA: $5 000
NCA: $15 000
Community Initiatives Fund: $12 500
City of Saskatoon: $25 000
Canada 150 Grant (+ City of Saskatoon): $250 000
——————————————————
Total Estimated Park Budget: $450 000

IMPORTANT: Please make cheques payable to: City of Saskatoon. Mark the cheque with “Albert Rec Unit”.
All donations will receive a tax receipt from the City of Saskatoon. All donations of $100 and above will receive a Good Deed document. Donors at $500 and above will also receive recognition in the park.

Albert Rec Unit Rejuvenation – feedback

The Albert Recreation Unit on the corner of Clarence and 13th Street, has been a little park used by Nutana and Varsity View residents for over 70 years. While the park has served us well, it is beginning to show its age.

We want to update the park and playground equipment to serve our neighbourhoods for generations to come.

The park renewal committee is focused on these goals:
• maintain the paddling pool and building
• increase the green space
• modernize some of the playground equipment
• make the park a safe and welcoming place for all in our neighbourhoods

(see our draft plan on our Facebook page)

While the overall cost won’t be known until a final design is approved, the City of Saskatoon, and the Nutana and Varsity View Community Associations have all promised to support the project. We need your support too!

These may be big plans for our little park, but we believe that the neighbourhood deserves and will support a great little park like this.

We welcome your comments, questions and suggestions by October 30, 2015.

Big Plans for a Little Park – Albert Rec. Unit

Albert Recreational Unit, at the corner of Clarence Avenue and 13th Street, has been a little park in the Nutana and Varsity View neighbourhoods for over 70 years – starting as a paddling pool and then expanding with a surrounding park and playground.

While the park has served us well over these years – both as a neighbourhood destination on hot summer days and as a fun playground area – the park is beginning to show its age, especially in the style and condition of its playground.

A small ambitious neighbourhood group wants to change this. We want to update the park and playground equipment to give a boost to the park’s usage and its longevity.

These may be big plans for our little park, but we believe that the neighbourhood deserves and will support a great little park like this. Ideas and concepts are still being discussed, but in broad strokes the committee is focused on these goals:
– maintain the paddling pool and building
– increase the green space
– modernize some (or all) of the playground equipment
– make the park a safe and welcoming place for all in the neighbourhood

Our energetic group is meeting regularly and we look forward to sharing our ideas with the neighbourhood, both for community feedback and also to begin fundraising.

We welcome your comments and suggestions as we begin making our big plans, and trust you will help support our little park.

Chief Darcy Bear Park – Naming of the Park Celebration

Chief Darcy Bear Park (beside Nutana Collegiate) Naming of the Park Celebration – Wednesday June 3rd 11am.

The City has taken responsibility of the old Nutana Collegiate school field (and once the Saskatoon Exhibition grounds), and re-landscaped it with a Community Garden and play structure. The park has been named after Chief Darcy Bear in recognition of his accomplishments, the longstanding relationship between the Whitecap Dakota First Nation the City, and the School Board (and the fact that Chief Darcy Bear is a Nutana Collegiate Graduate himself).

Come out to this historic event, there will be a Naming Ceremony and a BBQ as part of the celebration.
