NEW #808 Bus Route

Saskatoon Transit is piloting a new bus route that will improve access to many medical and health facilities throughout the city. Route 808 will run on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. starting June 1, 2018.

It will service the following facilities every 45 minutes:

Bus Stop Number – Building
#5899 – City Hall
#3168 – Saskatoon Housing Authority
#5839 – RUH / Cancer Centre
#5838 – Field House
#5480 – Luther Tower
#4140 – Ronald McDonald House
#5865 – City Hospital
#3169 – Medical Arts Building

Route 808 will provide Access Transit customers with an alternative transportation option to attend medical and health appointments.

Use the Transit mobile app or route map to plan your trip.

If the pilot route is determined as successful based on customer feedback, it may become permanent.

Curbside Swap 2018

Saskatoon Curbside Swap
Have clean, usable stuff to give away? Want free stuff? Swap it!
Reduce the amount of garbage ending up in landfill by giving away your stuff to someone or find free stuff of your own. At a curbside swap, place your unwanted items in good condition on your property (next to the side walk or curb) and mark them as free for anyone to pick up or go out on a treasure hunt of your own to find what your neighbors are giving away for free.

Let’s SWAP it Saskatoon !!
Plan a curbside swap this summer or join the annual city-wide curbside event on September 08, 2018. Contact your Community Association to find out if a Curbside Swap is planned for your neighbourhood. Promote your event online on the Curbside Swap Facebook event page at Saskatoon City News. Check out the Curbside Swap Host Manual for information.

How you can Swap!
• Mark all your items free that you wish to give away.
• Do not put out items with potential safety hazards, for example weapons, chemicals, mattress infested with bedbugs, broken furniture or expired child car seats.
• Do not block traffic, sidewalks or place items on road.
• Do not trespass on other people’s property, block other people’s driveway or park illegally.
• Be in compliance with the Temporary Sign Bylaw No. 7491.
• Return unclaimed items into your homes by 6:00 p.m.

Household Hazardous Waste Days 2018

Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are the discarded, unused or leftover portion of household products containing chemicals that can cause illness or death to people, plants and animals. These products are often labeled CAUTION, WARNING, CORROSIVE, EXPLOSIVE, FLAMMABLE, POISONOUS or TOXIC. Common household hazardous wastes include aerosols, cleaning solvents, oils, paints, pesticides and batteries. These and many other types of hazardous materials should not be put in your garbage or recycling bins, dumped on the ground or poured down the drain.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Days run from 8:00am to 2:30 pm at SaskTel Centre on designated dates. This year, events will be held on:
• May 27 (Sunday)
• June 16
• July 14
• August 18
• September 8
• October 28 (Sunday)
• November 17

Library Knowlympics

Saskatoon Public Library (SPL) is launching our 2nd Annual Knowlympics, an all-ages summer learning program. On Saturday, June 2 we will host our kick-off event at Frances Morrison Central Library.

A group of river user organizations are gathering to present a Public Demo & Participation Day on Saturday, May 5th at River Landing. Saskatoon Cycles in partnership with the City of Saskatoon is pleased to host Bike to Work Day YXE 2018

About Bike to Work Day:

Bike to Work Day (BTWD) is an annual event that promotes and celebrates the bicycle as a viable mode of transportation. BTWD has now grown into a widespread event with countless bicyclists taking to the streets in an effort to get commuters to try bicycling to work as a healthy and safe alternative to driving alone.

The Commuter Stations are the backbone of Bike to Work Day and brighten what for many is a routine commute, and each year we aim to have a number of Bike to Work Day Commuter Stations all over Saskatoon.

Host a Commuter Station:

If you or your business or organization is interested in hosting or co-hosting a BTWD Commuter Station please contact our BTWD co-ordinator, jenthoma@saskatooncycles.org. Co-hosting with other local businesses or organizations allows for friendly collaboration, assistance with costs and more human power to run your station. Commuter Station possibilities are endless and could include snack and beverage stations, giveaways, discounts for cyclists, bike maintenance and more.

The Saskatoon Public Library has launched a consultation process to gather input from citizens regarding what they would like to see in a new central library for Saskatoon. There is an online survey that is currently open www.saskatooncentrallibrary.ca and the Library is hosting an Open House March 28 / 4 – 8pm / Saskatoon Farmers’ Market.

School Break Camp

City of Saskatoon Offering School Break Camps April 3 – 5, 2018

The City has teamed with EB Sports Academy, Jade Roberts and the University of Saskatchewan 7’s Rugby team to offer active and accessible camps for youth aged 10-14 during the spring school break.

The camps are free and youth can register for multiple sessions:

• Session 1: Tuesday April 3rd 9:00am – 12:00pm – Rugby
• Session 2: Tuesday April 3rd 1:00pm – 4:00pm – Rugby
• Session 3: Wednesday April 4th 9:00am – 12:00pm – Basketball
• Session 4: Wednesday April 4th 1:00pm – 4:00pm – Basketball
• Session 5: Thursday April 5th 9:00am – 12:00pm – Double Ball
• Session 6: Thursday April 5th 1:00pm – 4:00pm – Floor Hockey

All activities will take place at the Cosmo Civic Centre, 3130 Laurier Drive.

AAA Downtown Cycling Network

The City of Saskatoon is inviting Saskatoon residents to learn more about the development of an All Ages & Abilities (AAA) Downtown Cycling Network. This network has been in development since fall 2017 when the Downtown Protected Bike Lane Demonstration concluded. AAA cycling facilities physically separate people riding bikes from drivers, thereby increasing the comfort and safety of all cyclists.

The network plan considers the following:
– Connection to Saskatoon’s wider cycling network;
– Integration with other key downtown projects such as Bus Rapid Transit and the re-opening of Traffic Bridge;
– Impacts to all users in the downtown in identifying the most appropriate streets to host AAA facilities.

Communities in Bloom is a provincial and national program that recognizes community participation in projects involving beautification, heritage, and environmental awareness. Participants are judged on the quality of the municipality’s green spaces, diversity and originality of its landscaping, general tidiness, environmental awareness, heritage, and the level of community involvement.

As a result a great opportunity exists for communities to generate civic pride and local participation, while gaining recognition across the country. Diefenbaker Canada Centre – Free interpretive tours
The Diefenbaker Canada Centre is offering free interpretive gallery tours every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm in March of our current travelling exhibit “Hockey” and “Hockey: A Common Goal”. Please e-mail dief.centre@usask.ca or call 306-966-8483 to reserve your spot.

Sunday March 4: CHEP Good Food Inc & Slow Food Saskatoon
Three of Slow Food Saskatoon’s local chefs compete head to head using locally grown and sourced ingredients from CHEP’s Good Food Box Program. Those who attend will sample the dishes and in the end decide the winner.

Thursday March 8: Eritrean Women’s League
Eritrean Women’s league is inviting you to celebrate International Women’s Day at Saba’s African Cuisine. Tickets are $25.00 /includes supper and traditional coffee (can be picked up from restaurant). There will be guest speakers during the event.

Friday March 9: Saskatchewan German Council Inc.
The event is hosted by the Saskatchewan German Council in Partnership with the Saskatchewan Library Association for their
Program “One Book, One Province” and is part of an international cooking series open to the public. The class is “Apfelkuchen Now and Then”, where participants will learn all about Apfelkuchen (apple cakes) along with a recipe from Amy Jo Ehman’s “Out of Old Saskatchewan Kitchens”. There will be another reading as well, once the cakes are finished baking. The cost per person is $20.00, preregistration and payment is required. Please contact the SGC office for the registration form and to make
arrangements for payment.
