Air Guitar Saskatchewan Championships

Calling Saskatoon Air Heads!

Saturday, May 14th will mark the beginning of a new era with the inaugural Air Guitar Saskatchewan Championships at The Saskatoon Farmer’s Market – In support of children’s charity Creative Kids.

The Saskatchewan Air Guitar Champ will receive a ‘plethora’ of prizes, mad street cred and then go on to the National Championships in Toronto for their chance to be crowned the Canadian Champ and possibly go on to Finland for the 21st Air Guitar World Championships on Aug. 25-28th.

REGISTER TO COMPETE: http://airguitarcanada.org/air-guitarist-registration/

How does one do this? Start with an Air Guitar persona, pick a song to rock out to for one minute, and if you make it to the second round… show off your improvisational skills to the tune of a song chosen that night by the audience.

Air Guitar is about world peace. The saying goes: “When you are holding an Air Guitar, you can’t be holding a gun”

Consider it your rock and roll duty, your volunt’air’ism so to speak – because proceeds of the event go to Creative Kids, a local Saskatoon organization that aims to help children through the power of the arts and creativity.

You can learn more at http://airguitarcanada.org/

11th Annual City Wide Food Drive

The 11th Annual City Wide Food Drive in support of the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre is just around the corner!

The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre has been seeing a drastic increase of people accessing our Food Hamper program. Serving more than 20,000 people in recent months, we are in a great need of food to help fill the shelves.

On May 7th follow these easy steps to help contribute to the health of our community:

1. Watch your mailbox for your donation bag in late April coming with your subscription to the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

2. Fill the bag with healthy non-perishable food donations. (Don’t get the StarPhoenix? Just pack a regular bag with non-perishable food and clearly label it for volunteers.)

3. Set your bag on your front doorstep by 10am on Saturday May 7th.

4. A large team of volunteers will set out into the Saskatoon neighbourhoods to collect from your doorstep between 10 am and 2 pm.

5. If you live in a condo/ apartment, or your bag is accidentally missed, please bring your donations to your nearest grocery store’s Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre collection bin.

Visit our website for information about our programs: www.saskatoonfoodbank.org or Facebook.

I am Eleven

I am Eleven – Documentary screening
Thursday, March 17th 2016
Broadway Theatre
Door Open 6:30pm
Tickets: $10.00 (cash)

Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey travelled the world for six years talking with 11-year-olds to compose this insightful, funny and moving documentary portrait of childhood. From an orphanage in India, to a single-parent household in inner-city Melbourne, to bathing with elephants in Thailand, I AM ELEVEN explores the lives and thoughts of children from 15 countries. I AM ELEVEN weaves together deeply personal and at times hilarious portraits of what it means to sit at this transitional age. These young minds provide us with a powerful insight into the future of our world.

CISV chapters all over the world are bringing this documentary to their communities. We hope you can help make our screening a huge success here in Saskatoon by inviting all your friends, family and colleagues to this screening and of course coming yourself!

CISV (formerly Children’s International Summer Villages) is a global network of volunteers of all ages. We are an independent and non-political organization with chapters in over 200 cities worldwide. CISV’s unique educational programmes bring together young people from different backgrounds, developing cross-cultural knowledge and leadership. By encouraging respect for cultural differences, common values and self-awareness, CISV empowers each participant to incorporate these values into their lives as they become global citizens and strive for a more peaceful world. Young people take an active role in programme planning, developing key leadership and communication skills.

CISV Canada is active from coast to coast! From Victoria to Halifax, CISVers are promoting CISV values in their local communities. Each year, youth and adults from these same communities travel to international CISV programmes around the world. There are as many opportunities for involvement locally as internationally: CISV has a dynamic national network of young people. This group, called the Junior Branch (JB), is dedicated to organising regional and national activities for Canadian youth. Each local CISV chapter has an active group of Junior Branch members, open to anyone who wants to be involved (starting at age 10). JB organizes regular activities, community projects, workshops and mini camps. Completely youth-led, Junior Branch applies the CISV goals to the local community while participants learn and develop leadership.

Kidney Foundation Door-to-Door Campaign

In early 2016, the Saskatoon Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada will be conducting a campaign by telephone to recruit canvassers for our Door-to-Door Campaign, which will take place from March 11th – March 24nd 2016.

The Door-to-Door Campaign is a crucial component of our fundraising initiatives in Saskatoon, during which we rely almost entirely on volunteers. Many of our volunteers return year after year, but like any organization, we are always looking for new people to get involved and help this great cause.

The Saskatoon Branch of The Kidney Foundation of Canada is committed to reducing the burden of kidney disease by funding innovative research, providing education and support, and increasing public awareness of kidney health and organ donation.

All the funding directly benefits the people who need it the most.

Please give generously when a volunteer knocks on your door during the month of March. All volunteers will be able to write you an official tax receipt at the door.

Project Welcome Launched

Each year, hundreds of new Canadians make Saskatoon their new home. In the coming months we’ll be welcoming refugee children to our community, many of whom have been out of school for years or have never attended school at all.

Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation & the Saskatoon Open Door Society have teamed up to launch Project Welcome – a campaign to raise funds to enhance learning opportunities for refugee children and families. Funds raised will help educators and community workers go above and beyond the basic settlement services provided by government to offer additional opportunities for learning and belonging, such as enriched summer learning programs, dual language books and picture dictionaries, and assistance with transportation needs.

We’re asking for your help to make Project Welcome a success! Please help us share the message far and wide by sharing our social media posts on Facebook. For those who are able to contribute financially please visit www.spsfoundation.ca and click “donate.” All donations are tax-deductible and will be shared equally between the Saskatoon Open Door Society and Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation.

Project Welcome runs from Dec. 9, 2015 to Jan. 20, 2016.

Thank you for helping to welcome our new friends and neighbours!
