Pelican Watch 2020

From Meewasin:

With the warming temperatures outside, we can’t help but have spring on the mind! It is always a bittersweet time of year at Meewasin, since it means the closing of the Meewasin rink for the season; but also means the launch of our Spring programs – including Pelican Watch!

Saskatoon residents have special visitors each summer. April through October, pelicans gather by the weir to fish. These birds, once on the endangered species list, have been a beautiful sight on the South Saskatchewan River since the late 1970s. For Saskatoon residents, their arrival is a harbinger of spring.

The contest
Guess the arrival of the first pelican to land at the weir for a chance to win a $500 prize pack, with a special pizza party for the youth winner’s whole class!

Follow along on our Facebook event page for fun facts about pelicans all month, and feel free to share the page on any of your social media pages!

Good luck and happy (almost) spring!

Chalk Mural Record

Have you heard?! On August 31st 2019, Meewasin is attempting to make history by setting a new world record for the longest chalk mural right in Saskatoon on the Meewasin Trails, and we need your help!

In order to break the world record, the whole mural must reflect a ‘Meewasin Valley’ theme. This can include anything relating to the natural world (plants, animals, insects, weather) or to things you see around the trails (the Bessborough, buildings, etc.) will count!

We are getting participants to register so we can ensure there are enough people at each of the stations. There is no experience necessary to be a chalker, which you can register for here

We are also looking for volunteer coordinators to help with getting the chalkers set up. You can register to volunteer here

More information about the event and sponsors can be found at our website page here or on our Facebook event page here

This will be a fun community event, meant to bring people to the outdoors, and to work together to accomplish breaking a record while creating beautiful art on the trails!

Use the Hashtag #MeewasinRecord on Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter leading up to, after, or at the event to get your name entered to win a prize pack! (Winner announced September 6th 2019)

Spread the word, bring family, friends, and be part of history!

River Access Study

River Access Study 2016 Online Survey and Public Open House

The City of Saskatoon, in partnership with Meewasin Valley Authority (MVA), is conducting a river access study. The purpose of the study is to identify the river access requirements for Saskatoon residents, visitors, commercial enterprises, on-river special events, industrial users, emergency services, and monitoring services. The primary focus will be on facilities for launching and mooring motorized and non-motorized watercraft; however, it will address all forms of river access.

The South Saskatchewan River is a valuable recreation access for Saskatoon and area residents and visitors. In the Saskatoon area, it is utilized for a number of activities, including:

Recreation: motorized boaters, canoeists, kayakers, rowers, and paddle boarders
Commercial/Industrial: tour boats, dredging, construction, and other barges
Regulatory and Emergency Services: police and fire services, water quality, environmental issues, and other monitoring
These users require safe, environmentally-sound access to the river with appropriate infrastructure.

As part of the study, citizens are invited to participate in an online survey to gather input on current launching/mooring opportunities and ideas on an optimal scenario. Interested parties can access the survey at shapingsaskatoon.ca. The survey is open until Thursday, December 15, 2016.

There will also be a public open house on Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Meewasin Valley Centre Boardroom (402 Third Avenue South) from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The City and MVA will present the plan, answer questions, and collect feedback. Formal presentations will take place at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
