2014–15 SMHA Hockey Registration

Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association Moves to Spring Registration for 2014

Registration for SMHA for the 2014-2015 hockey season will take place April 15, 2014 – June 15, 2014. There will not be a fall registration.

Why the change to spring registration?

Due to increasing registration numbers and limited ice availability, SMHA registration for 2014-2015 will take place this spring.

The need to gather numbers to insure sufficient ice allocation is paramount. SMHA has grown from 245 teams in its leagues in 2007-08 to 294 teams in 2013-2014. On top of this, SMHA has access to one less sheet of ice now than it did in 07-08.

This type of growth has put pressure on the allocation and scheduling of ice. Having registration numbers in the spring will assist to start ice allocation and scheduling sooner than we do now.

The move to spring registration is a good business initiative for a growing registration base and static ice availability.

We thank all SMHA families for their understanding and cooperation with this change in timing.

There will not be fall registration. Please register in the period noted above in order to secure minor hockey registration for next season.

Easter Seals Drop Zone!

The Easter Seals Drop Zone will showcase Saskatoon’s finest Superheroes on August 25, 2014, as they rappel down Boardwalk Rental Communities’ 22-storey Carlton Tower in a heroic effort to raise money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan and to make a huge difference in the lives of children and youth living with varying abilities.

With fun and fortitude, participants that raise $1,500.00 or more will be able to rappel down the side of one of Saskatoon’s tallest buildings. All participants are trained by expert staff and on event day participants are supervised by Remote Access Technology – a team of professionals who rappel in situations all over the world.

Music, food, refreshments, and good cheer will flood the event as participants touch down after their descent. The 2014 Superhero After-Party will be just as exciting as the Superheroes’ rappel! It is a chance for participants, sponsors, and volunteers to share and celebrate their Superhero experiences while Easter Seals staff will have an opportunity to recognize the heroic fundraising efforts made by these individuals.

Special Projects Update

Special Projects Update: Making Dreams a Reality in Varsity View and Grosvenor Park

Firstly, a big thank you to those of you who shared your views of our community the past few months. By consulting residents through dialogue, our website, and email, we built a clear picture of what residents would support in our community. Your feedback
put a strong emphasis on enriching public spaces, which is certainly a theme we will embrace.

Projects we are advancing through proposals, partnerships, and grant requests:

  • Functional art/seating area spaces in Raoul Wallenberg park (in partnership with Congregation Agudas Israel) and other parks.
  • Upgrades to Albert Recreational Park (in partnership with Nutana Community Association).
  • Playground upgrades to Brunskill School (in partnership with the school community).
  • A litter reduction project.
  • A heritage trail and signage.

As grants and partnerships are finalized in the coming months, we will tell residents more about these projects and will be asking for your financial support to enhance the beauty, uniqueness, and opportunity of our neighbourhood.

I encourage you to join us at our AGM April 16th to share your views on these ideas for our community (and also to discuss a slight change to our constitution, intended to bring the length of notice of our AGM in line with The Non-Profit Corporations Act).

Get involved in making a difference!
