YAS Summer Basketball School

40th Annual Young Athlete Saskatchewan Summer Basketball School

YAS Award-Winning Basketball Camps
• Cosmo Civic Centre Weekly Throughout August
• Different Camps For Different Skill Levels
• Everyone Welcome

YAS coaches are continuously innovating and adjusting the YAS summer basketball camps skills-development program in order to maintain YAS’s standing as a sports-school leader. Each year, top teacher-coaches from universities, colleges and secondary schools are surveyed in order to determine the skills that they regard as current top priority and in need of emphasis among young developing players.

That input from college professionals and teacher-coaches is then incorporated into YAS summer basketball camps.
12,547 players from 272 communities have graduated from YAS’s award-winning summer basketball camps since YAS was founded in 1975. Each YAS graduate returned home armed with the skills and confidence needed to excel in basketball and other sports, and most importantly to take leadership roles at school and to make positive contributions to their overall communities.

#GivingShoesDay – Dress for Success

December 2, 2014 is
#GivingShoesDay
CLIMBING THE LADDER OF SUCCESS WITH DRESS FOR SUCCESS!
DROP OFF YOUR GENTLY USED PROFESSIONAL SHOES, FLATS and BOOTS AT DURAND’S DURING NOVEMBER AND ENTER TO WIN A $500 DURAND’S GIFT CERTIFICATE.
255 2nd Ave South – Saskatoon
Phone (306) 933-3336

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the independence of economically disadvantaged women by providing work-appropriate attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

#GivingTuesday will be #GivingShoesDay in Saskatoon on Tuesday, December 2 with a Dress for Success (DFS) promotion encouraging women to donate their gently used professional shoes to help disadvantaged women entering the workforce. Shoes can be dropped off throughout November at Durand’s where the collection is anticipated to grow to mountainous proportions. In the spirit of giving, donors can enter to win a $500 store gift certificate from Durand’s with the draw taking place in-store on December 2.

#GivingTuesday, now a global phenomenon, started in 2012 in the US as a day for gifting to chosen charities after the flurry of shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Last year on #GivingShoesDay, American DFS affiliates collected over 1,700 pairs of shoes for clients. This year, the top 10 shoe donors globally will be rewarded with a pair of ruby red “Raegan” heels designed by Fergie Footwear.

Disadvantaged women entering or re-entering the workforce after career training are referred to the entirely volunteer-run DFS Saskatoon as clients through agencies such as the YWCA, Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre and Gabriel Dumont Institute. At an interview suiting, the client is given a morale and confidence boost by her ‘boutique experience’ where volunteers provide her with advice and service as she tries on various pieces and selects a complete interview outfit.

Once employment is secured, the client can return to select a week’s wardrobe of up to 30 pieces that will carry her through her first weeks of work. She’ll be invited to join the Professional Women’s Group which provides speakers and networking opportunities, covering topics such as personal financial management, work/life balance and workplace etiquette. All services are provided to clients free of charge.

Seniors’ Globe Walk

The Saskatoon Council On Aging is a community leader in the health and independence of older adults. During community consultations for the Age-friendly Saskatoon Initiative, older adults identified the need for more physical activity and social opportunities during the winter months. The Seniors’ Globe Walk is a response to that need.

Participants in The Seniors’ Globe Walk 2015 will have an “out of this world” experience. Not only will it provide them with an excellent opportunity to stay active but they’ll also have fun being a member of a team working towards a common goal – to walk the distance equivalent to going to the moon.

We’ll begin the walk on January 5th, 2015 and continue counting our steps until April 30th, 2015. 2,000 steps equals approximately 1 mile. For those who prefer other forms of physical activity that cannot be measured in steps or distance they can log one mile for every thirty minutes of activity. Registration is free thanks to funding from The Investors Group, Saskatoon Health Region Community Wellness, and Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation.

Community Organizations are encouraged to form teams of adults 50+. For details on how your community can be active participants please contact Linda, the project coordinator, Phone: 306-652-0027 or E-mail.
