Clarence Ave. & Main Street Engagement Session

The City of Saskatoon completed a traffic review at the intersection of Clarence Avenue and Main Street this summer after several residents reached out with concerns about safety. Channelization on Main Street is recommended to address these safety concerns.

A second engagement session is planned to collect feedback and additional comments from community members in Nutana and Varsity View on the recommended channelization.

WHEN: Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 6:30-8 pm
WHERE: Albert Community Centre loft (3rd floor, wheelchair accessible)

BACKGROUND: To improve safety at the intersection and address collision patterns, channelization on Main Street is recommended. This involves modifying the existing medians on Main Street at both approaches to create right turn only lanes. Drivers on Main Street would be required to turn right at the intersection and would no longer be able to drive straight through or turn left onto Clarence Avenue.

November 2022 board meeting

Thanks for those who attended our November board meeting on Wednesday November 16. Here is a broad overview of some of the items we discussed:

– VVCA to order tent for outdoor events (City to partially reimburse such permanent promotional items)
– Grosvenor Park ski trail may be done this week by City. VVCA is holding discussions with a community member about having President Murray Park done.
– UPDATED: Main and Clarence intersection City decision postposed until the new year. More City public engagement is planned for Winter/Spring 2023.
– encourage community members to view City videos about College Corridor Plan and partake in surveys, here: https://www.saskatoon.ca/engage/college-corridor-plan
– Residential Permit Parking (RPP) is expanding in Varsity View and signage should be go up late December or early January https://www.saskatoon.ca/moving-around/parking/parking-programs-permits/residential-parking-program
– small external group held discussions regarding petty crime and Grosvenor Park Shopping Centre noise and disturbances. Some recommendations from group: 1) start 8th Street Business Improvement group to speak with one voice about concerns, 2) stronger police response to nuisance and disturbances (ticketing), 3) install No Loitering signs on affected businesses so enforcement is easier, 4) encourage community members to report issues to police, either by phone or online – police need data to prioritize response, 5) provide awareness article and police phone and online links in newsletter.
– new basketballs bought for program
– thanks to Fredy for work on rink. One flood has been done by Kenton!
– programs beginning January 2023 listed on website. Registration nights are January 10 and 12.
– appoint Gary Ayotte as VVCA rep at Albert Community Centre board.
– newsletter deadline is November 22. Will be published and distributed to neighbourhood between Christmas and New Years.
– let Zoom licenses lapse. Not currently using them.

College Corridor Plan – surveys

Surveys on Prioritizing Public Realm Improvements

The feedback the City received on public realm improvements was compiled and shared in September – please see https://www.saskatoon.ca/engage/college-corridor-plan.

The City has taken the feedback and developed a list of potential open space and streetscape improvements for the area. Now, we would like your help in prioritizing where resources should be focused when we develop the plan.

If you have the time we would appreciate it if you could share your preferences in one or both of the following surveys.

Open Space survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/collegeopenspace

Streetscape survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/collegestreetscape

In addition, we are hosting a walk-through of the surveys on November 21 at 7pm to allow for questions and clarifications. This will be a hybrid event (online and in-person) and will be recorded and posted to the website. It isn’t intended to be a traditional engagement event: rather the focus will be solely on helping people fill out the survey.

College Corridor Plan survey

College Corridor – Land Use Scenarios

Please budget at least 15-20 minutes to complete this survey. This survey will be open until the end of Friday December 10.

Corridor plans are a framework for future development to transform major streets, or “corridors” near the future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes into places for people. The College Corridor Plan covers the area located along College Drive and Preston Avenue, beside the University of Saskatchewan lands. For a map of the College Corridor Plan study area, background information about this project’s objectives and process, and to sign up for our Corridor Planning email newsletter, please visit saskatoon.ca/engage/college-corridor-plan.

In response to the input received from the community in early November, the project team has developed a few potential scenarios for distributing density in the study area. The goal of this survey is to build a single, refined option based on community input on the different potential scenarios presented here:
1) College Drive Scenario #1
2) College Drive Scenario #2
3) College Drive Scenario #3
4) Preston Scenario #1
5) Preston Scenario #2

Survey results are anonymous and no identifying information will be included in our reports, unless you are completing the survey on behalf of an organization and choose to provide your organization’s name in the “Tell us about yourself” section.

No Fall 2021 soccer

Unfortunately, VVCA has decided to not offer a fall 2021 soccer season in order to be fully prepared for a strong spring 2022 season.

As we prepared for the fall season, we discovered that we did not have enough time to integrate with the Saskatoon Youth Soccer Inc. RAMP registration system to make it easy for parents and players to register. We plan to be fully integrated with RAMP to offer a seamless registration process for the Spring 2022 season. We apologize for any inconvenience.

See the Saskatoon Youth Soccer website for alternative options: http://saskatoonyouthsoccer.ca/content/how-to-register

University Sector Plan

Have your say in the future of the University Sector Plan

The University of Saskatchewan has nearly 1,000 acres of endowment land located within five kilometers of downtown Saskatoon. These important lands provide critical resources that strategically support the university’s teaching, learning and research mission.

In 2008 a land-use task force was formed, bringing together the University of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon, Meewasin Valley Authority and the Province of Saskatchewan, to create ‘Vision 2057.’‘Vision 2057’, in alignment with the City of Saskatoon’s growth plan and strategic infill initiatives, identifies university endowment lands that are suitable for commercial and residential development opportunities, along with the creation of multi-use community facilities, parks and open spaces, and also preserves abundant space for learning and research activities.

Recognizing the importance of developing these lands in a sustainable way that benefits everyone in Saskatoon, the City and University entered a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a Sector Plan for the area. Developing the Plan involved consultation with community partners and stakeholders, and it provides the framework within which the area will be planned and developed.

The result of this partnership and outreach, the University Sector Plan, is a shared vision of land use and development that will have a positive impact for the city, its residents and the University community.

You can find out more about the University Sector Plan, including a Plan Summary and a short video, by visiting the Engage page at saskatoon.ca/engage/university-sector-plan. You can also email universitysector@saskatoon.ca if you have specific questions or want to find out more about how to participate in the engagement process.

So you want to be President?

Interested in making your community a little better? The Varsity View Community Association is always looking for volunteers!

VVCA is run by friendly volunteers who organize and attend meetings, provide programs and activites for youth and adults, work with the City regarding development, parking, policing and other issues, keep the rink in good condition, publish a newsletter and website, raise money for community events and projects, and generally try to make the Varsity View and Grosvenor Park neighbourhoods a little nicer to live in.

Sounds fun, right? If something on that short list fills a need in you, or you have other ideas on how to improve your neighbourhood, join us on Zoom at a monthly VVCA board meeting and have your say. We’d love to hear your ideas and would be more than happy to find you a spot on our board if you are interested.

Right now, the VVCA is looking for a President – someone to act as a chair for our meetings, prepare agendas, meet with and represent the community, and inspire us all to improve the community and the City. Sounds like a big job, but it’s more than worth it and there are lots of other volunteers to help share the load.

Email info@vvcasaskatoon.com for more information, or check our About page or Facebook for information on the dates of our next board meeting.

Rink Raffle

Please support our Varsity View Community Association Rink Renovation Project Raffle!

Our local Varsity View community skating rink brings together adults and children alike for fun with friends and family all winter long with skating and hockey. It feels like old fashioned place where friends and strangers meet, come and go, join an informal game of hockey or skate around and have a chat. From young kids, to college students, to grandparents, all play together and the natural harmony created is infectious.

This community rink is in dire need of a renovation, as the boards and fences are damaged and even dangerous. We are hoping to raise money to re-fence, re-board and regrade the rink, but we must raise money to make this dream a reality!

We created a raffle with the following fabulous prizes, some donated by businesses in our community:

Grand Prize: $1500 cash
2nd Prize: $200 cash plus Crew Rowhouse 12 class pass valued at $225

3rd Prize: $200 cash plus $175 All in the Wild Gallery gift certificate

4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Prize: $50 D’lish by Tish gift cards

3 tickets for $10 or 1 ticket for $5
Draw date: FEBRUARY 23, 2021

Covid-19 put a damper on our fundraising efforts, and the need for community members  to play outside all year-round is greater than ever!

We offer contactless ticket purchase by emailing angela.margaret.jones@gmail.com, and using e-transfer to that email. We will send you a picture of the tickets and ticket numbers, and if you desire the original tickets we will mail them to you.

This is a great local cause and every dollar raised is a dollar that goes straight to the renovation!
