Teacher and singer songwriter, Carmen Campagne became during the 90’s the idol of the children around the francophone countries. On stage, the majority of her songs talk about animals because she knows that children like farm animals, she interprets children preferred songs and happy tunes will be there to make this show, a refreshing show.

Franco Noel is a day of celebration filled with family activities and lives entertainment. Youngs, teenagers, parents, grandparents will appreciate sharing this moment.

#GivingShoesDay – Dress for Success

December 2, 2014 is
#GivingShoesDay
CLIMBING THE LADDER OF SUCCESS WITH DRESS FOR SUCCESS!
DROP OFF YOUR GENTLY USED PROFESSIONAL SHOES, FLATS and BOOTS AT DURAND’S DURING NOVEMBER AND ENTER TO WIN A $500 DURAND’S GIFT CERTIFICATE.
255 2nd Ave South – Saskatoon
Phone (306) 933-3336

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the independence of economically disadvantaged women by providing work-appropriate attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

#GivingTuesday will be #GivingShoesDay in Saskatoon on Tuesday, December 2 with a Dress for Success (DFS) promotion encouraging women to donate their gently used professional shoes to help disadvantaged women entering the workforce. Shoes can be dropped off throughout November at Durand’s where the collection is anticipated to grow to mountainous proportions. In the spirit of giving, donors can enter to win a $500 store gift certificate from Durand’s with the draw taking place in-store on December 2.

#GivingTuesday, now a global phenomenon, started in 2012 in the US as a day for gifting to chosen charities after the flurry of shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Last year on #GivingShoesDay, American DFS affiliates collected over 1,700 pairs of shoes for clients. This year, the top 10 shoe donors globally will be rewarded with a pair of ruby red “Raegan” heels designed by Fergie Footwear.

Disadvantaged women entering or re-entering the workforce after career training are referred to the entirely volunteer-run DFS Saskatoon as clients through agencies such as the YWCA, Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre and Gabriel Dumont Institute. At an interview suiting, the client is given a morale and confidence boost by her ‘boutique experience’ where volunteers provide her with advice and service as she tries on various pieces and selects a complete interview outfit.

Once employment is secured, the client can return to select a week’s wardrobe of up to 30 pieces that will carry her through her first weeks of work. She’ll be invited to join the Professional Women’s Group which provides speakers and networking opportunities, covering topics such as personal financial management, work/life balance and workplace etiquette. All services are provided to clients free of charge.

Seniors’ Globe Walk

The Saskatoon Council On Aging is a community leader in the health and independence of older adults. During community consultations for the Age-friendly Saskatoon Initiative, older adults identified the need for more physical activity and social opportunities during the winter months. The Seniors’ Globe Walk is a response to that need.

Participants in The Seniors’ Globe Walk 2015 will have an “out of this world” experience. Not only will it provide them with an excellent opportunity to stay active but they’ll also have fun being a member of a team working towards a common goal – to walk the distance equivalent to going to the moon.

We’ll begin the walk on January 5th, 2015 and continue counting our steps until April 30th, 2015. 2,000 steps equals approximately 1 mile. For those who prefer other forms of physical activity that cannot be measured in steps or distance they can log one mile for every thirty minutes of activity. Registration is free thanks to funding from The Investors Group, Saskatoon Health Region Community Wellness, and Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation.

Community Organizations are encouraged to form teams of adults 50+. For details on how your community can be active participants please contact Linda, the project coordinator, Phone: 306-652-0027 or E-mail.

“Trick or EAT”

The University of Saskatchewan is holding a charity event this Halloween to collect food for the Food Bank. We, at the U of S Language Centre’s ESL (English as a Second Language) Program, are providing our students the experience of a lifetime. Coming from many countries worldwide, our adult students are excited about experiencing a Canadian Halloween Night. We will be coming door-to-door between 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, October 31, 2014 to do some “Trick or Eating”. During this time, we will be collecting non-perishable food or monetary donations for the Food Bank. We are looking forward to reaching out to our surrounding community and would very much appreciate your support. Thank-you in advance!

P.S. Our students would also accept candy donations for their own personal sweet tooth, if you were so inclined!

Zoning Bylaw Amendments in Established Neighbourhoods

The City of Saskatoon, Planning and Development Division has been preparing proposed amendments to the Zoning Bylaw regulating primary dwellings (one-unit, two-unit and semi-detached dwellings) in established neighbourhoods. We have been working hard over the past few months to achieve a set of amendments which will encourage sensitive infill development and allow design flexibility for builders.

Included are changes to the standards for building height, building length, site width, and front porch encroachments. There are also proposed changes to the Sidewalk Crossing Bylaw to disallow curb cuts and driveway crossings in the older neighbourhoods. The information will be posted on the City of Saskatoon website prior to the meeting.

A public information meeting will be held on

Thursday, October 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Presentations will occur at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (the same material will be presented at both times)
Mayfair Library 306 – 33rd Street West.

In order to focus on the guidelines for primary dwellings, the amendments to regulate small scale multiple unit dwellings on corner sites (four per corner) will be deferred until early 2015.

VIDO-InterVac public meeting

The Community Liaison Committee for VIDO-InterVac invites you to a public meeting Tuesday October 14 at McNally Robinson Bookstore at 7 pm.

InterVac is a bio-containment Level 3 (CL3) facility where scientists study certain diseases and develop and test vaccines. The term CL3 describes the type of safety measures and equipment needed within the facility to ensure the safety of workers and the community.

The Community Liaison Committee is a diverse group of citizens including experts in emergency measures as well as citizens at large. The CLC is an independent committee established by the University of Saskatchewan to ensure communication on safety issues related to InterVac is open and transparent. The CLC continuously seeks information on activities of community concern, as well as monitors issues related to safety and any incidents of potential public interest. This is especially timely as operations have recently begun.

Dr. Andrew Potter, director, and several senior scientists will be available to answer questions.
