River Access Study

River Access Study 2016 Online Survey and Public Open House

The City of Saskatoon, in partnership with Meewasin Valley Authority (MVA), is conducting a river access study. The purpose of the study is to identify the river access requirements for Saskatoon residents, visitors, commercial enterprises, on-river special events, industrial users, emergency services, and monitoring services. The primary focus will be on facilities for launching and mooring motorized and non-motorized watercraft; however, it will address all forms of river access.

The South Saskatchewan River is a valuable recreation access for Saskatoon and area residents and visitors. In the Saskatoon area, it is utilized for a number of activities, including:

Recreation: motorized boaters, canoeists, kayakers, rowers, and paddle boarders
Commercial/Industrial: tour boats, dredging, construction, and other barges
Regulatory and Emergency Services: police and fire services, water quality, environmental issues, and other monitoring
These users require safe, environmentally-sound access to the river with appropriate infrastructure.

As part of the study, citizens are invited to participate in an online survey to gather input on current launching/mooring opportunities and ideas on an optimal scenario. Interested parties can access the survey at shapingsaskatoon.ca. The survey is open until Thursday, December 15, 2016.

There will also be a public open house on Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Meewasin Valley Centre Boardroom (402 Third Avenue South) from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The City and MVA will present the plan, answer questions, and collect feedback. Formal presentations will take place at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Saskatoon Curbside Swap

Saskatoon Curbside Swap – Saturday, September 10, 2016

Do you have clean, usable stuff to give away? Want free stuff? Swap it!

Join in the city-wide Curbside Swap on Saturday, Sept. 10. It works like this – Place unwanted items in good condition on your property (next to the sidewalk or curb) and mark them as FREE for anyone to pick-up. You can also search for free items for your own household! At the end of your Swap day, return your unclaimed items to your home along with your own newfound treasures.

Giving used items a new home keeps them out of our landfill and swapping helps to build a sense of community. To find out more, visit: saskatoon.ca/curbsideswap.

Block Parties

Meet your neighbours, know your community.

Block parties are a great way to build social connections and improve your community. Knowing your neighbours can make a difference:

It’s easier to get help from neighbours we know in a medical or other emergency than from a friend 10 minutes away.
Research shows that when neighbours know and trust each other, streets are safer and people are healthier and happier.

Organizing a block party with the City of Saskatoon is as easy as 1, 2, 3:
1. visit saskatoon.ca/blockparty for an application form
2. collect signatures from 51% of the homes on your block
3. return the form with a $20 application form

The City will deliver barricades to close your street on the date you choose and pick them up when the party is over. All noise and alcohol bylaws must be observed.

For more information, visit saskatoon.ca/blockparty

Community Garden Services
Saskatoon’s Compost Coaches will work with 3-5 community gardens this year to develop and/or improve their composting systems. The Compost Coach Coordinator is currently working with CHEP’s Community Garden Coordinator to determine which gardens to ask to participate. We hope to expand this program to more community gardens in future years, but do not have the resources to engage all of the gardens at once.

The Compost Coaches will provide compost bin materials, assistance to build the bins, compost education/training as needed, monthly garden visits to assist with the composting process, and signage for the bins to show what goes in.

Community Gardens will commit to improving their composting system, help build the compost bins, recruit volunteers to help with the composting process throughout the season, and encourage their members to receive compost education/training.

Community Gardens who are not participating this year may still access composting support through the Home Visit and Compost Hotline services.

Green Cart Program
To register for the curbside Green Cart program for food and yard waste collection, visit www.Saskatoon.ca/GreenCarts. Please note that food waste is now accepted.

Community Gardens and lawn bowling clubs may also register for Green Cart collection.

Citizen Budget Goes On the Road

Which civic services are most important to you? Would you like to have your say on how your property taxes are used? Would you like an opportunity to share your priorities and preferences on the City’s 2017 Budget?

With a goal to encourage participation in the annual budget process amongst residents, the City of Saskatoon will be at the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market this Saturday, June 4, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. to gather public feedback and promote Citizen Budget the City’s online interactive and educational tool.

Citizen Budget asks residents if the City should spend more, spend less, or spend the same on a variety of key civic services. The public can experience the complexity of building a City budget, and see the trade-offs that need to be considered when increasing, decreasing or providing the same level of service. Attendees at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market, and at future locations will also have an opportunity to Have Their Say via a dot exercise where they’re invited to indicate their service level expectations and priorities for Budget 2017.

This is the second year for Citizen Budget. Last spring, the City held a public open house at City Hall, and asked residents to complete a survey online and at “on the road” locations. Citizen Budget launched in fall 2015; the public engagement budget activities are earlier this year due to the 2016 Civic Elections, October 26, 2016.

By ‘taking it on the road’ and visiting various locations, City staff hope to increase public participation and feedback that will be considered by Administration and City Council prior to Budget 2017 deliberations this December.

Future dates and locations for Citizen Budget On the Road can be found on saskatoon.ca/financialfuture. The online Citizen Budget tool is open until June 24. Residents wishing to complete a paper survey on their service level preferences, can do so in the lobby of City Hall.

Citizen Budget, and other public engagement activities such as the Annual Civic Services Survey, align with all of the City of Saskatoon’s Strategic Goals. We invest in what matters most to residents; the services we provide are aligned with what citizens expect; when people are actively engaged in the future and governance of their city, and through conversation and working together, we move the city forward, together.
