Take Back the Night

Take Back The Night is an annual rally and March that will be held this year at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 21st. The rally will begin at the YWCA on 25th street at 7:00pm. We will have a guest speaker that will raise awareness about gender-based violence issues followed by a March up 25th street and the College Drive Bridge.

All are welcome to help raise awareness of gender-based violence and to help create safe communities and respectful relationships. We are seeking to end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence.

*There will be an off duty city bus that can help transport anyone with mobility issues that would like to take part in the event. There will be refreshments and entertainment to follow the march.

Public Space Design Charrette

Residents of the Nutana neighbourhood are invited to participate in a design charrette to discuss options for the public space created by the closure of 14th Street between Temperance Street and Lansdowne Avenue (next to D’lish Cafe). The meeting will be jointly hosted by the City of Saskatoon, Transportation and Urban Design Divisions.

Fall Photography Nature Walk

Join us for a nature walk at Beaver Creek Conservation area, with plenty of stops for taking photos. This is a free event for all photography levels and abilities. Come prepared with your camera/cellphone/picture taking device and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Led by Meghan Mickelson, who will give pointers on taking nature photos.

Location: Beaver Creek Conservation Area (just outside Saskatoon). Meet outside on the back deck.

We will walk the yellow and green trail (total distance 2.4 km).

About Meghan: A self taught photographer who has had a camera in her hand since she was 10, and spent many years working at a camera shop. Meghan lives in Saskatoon, where she is a mom, a volunteer, and an avid nature photographer.

RESULTS Canada (RC) is a non-profit national grassroots advocacy organization. For more than 30 years, we have worked to create the political will to end global poverty and demonstrate that individuals can make a difference when they employ their political power. A central element of our work is educating citizens and decision-makers about key problems and solutions associated with extreme poverty. Central to RESULTS Canada’s mission are its citizen advocates, passionate people who convene to take action on and create change around the world’s most pressing issues. For the upcoming school year we are looking for enthusiastic leaders who want to take on the challenge of being an ambassador for RESULTS. Included below are some of the volunteer roles we are looking to fill. Please take a look to see which seems like the best fit for you.

Group Leader and Co-Leader will:
• Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided)
• Inspire and lead a group of student volunteers to collectively learn and take actions on solutions to end extreme poverty. (Material and support provided)
• Mobilize the group to engage their wider community about issues and solutions to end extreme poverty and about the power of citizen’s voices.
• Support and coordinate the roles of the members in the team, and liaise with the RESULTS National Office and Community.

Outreach Ambassador will:
• Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided)
• Reach out to students, teachers and community members to expand the reach of your RESULTS Canada group.
• Develop an outreach strategy to engage more people in taking advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaigns.

Logistics Ambassador will:
• Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided)
• Coordinate bookings of rooms, meetings, tables and banner space.
• Manage database of contacts.

Internal Relations Ambassador will:
• Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided)
• Liaise with club administration, other Club’s executives and, with the leader/co-leader, with RESULTS National Office and Community.
• Liaise and partner with other clubs in order to get more people involved in our campaigns against extreme poverty.

Promotions Ambassador will:
• Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided)
• Manage the chapter’s social media presence.
• With the support of the National Office, create promotional materials to use on campus.
• Liaise with student and community media outlets, such as radio and newspapers.

As a RESULTS Canada advocate, you will have the chance to apply to participate in the group leader retreat and the RESULTS National conference happening. These two events are happening in Ottawa in 2018 and will offer valuable leadership training, networking and advocacy experiences. We will be providing a certain amount of bursaries to attend these events. In addition, there are always opportunities to apply for funding for events such as the annual International Conference in Washington were volunteers use their advocacy skills in a meeting with the World Bank, as an example.

Police Chief Survey

The recruitment process for Saskatoon’s next Chief of Police is now fully underway.

The Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners wants to ensure that citizens have the opportunity to share their views and opinions about the top attributes and priorities in the selection of the new Police Chief.

The Commission has set up a very brief (just 4 questions) and anonymous survey that provides an opportunity for you to provide your views. The survey can be found on the Police Commission’s website at saskatoonpolicecommission.com in the top right corner of the home page. Clicking on “What Residents Want In Their Next Police Chief” will take you directly to the survey.

The Saskatoon Police Commission will use this response from the survey of the public to refine its selection criteria in the recruitment, selection and hiring of Saskatoon’s next Police Chief.

Graffiti Reduction

Spring can often mean that it is graffiti season. Rinks are often a target for Graffiti. If you experience graffiti please follow these steps:
Record It – Take a picture of the graffiti vandalism as soon as it is identified.
Report It – Report all incidents of damage to your property by calling Saskatoon Police Service at 975-8300.
Remove It – Remove graffiti from your property as quickly as possible. The faster and more frequently graffiti is cleaned up, the less it reappears.

What can I do if I see graffiti on someone else’s property?
To report graffiti vandalism on property other than your own call 975-2828.

Play like a Girl

The City of Saskatoon’s Recreation and Community Development Division, in partnership with Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan, Sask Sport Inc., and Women in Sport – Physical Activity and Recreation, will be hosting Play Like a Girl on Sunday, September 10, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SaskTel Sports Centre (150 Nelson Road). Registrations are still being accepted for this free one-day event for girls, ages 10 to 14.

Gold Walk Saskatoon

Join us on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 1pm-4pm for the 3rd Annual Gold Walk in Saskatoon!! It will be a time to honor and remember those kids in our local community, and throughout Canada, who have been diagnosed with cancer. We will walk a short walk through downtown Saskatoon, spreading awareness and fundraising for Childhood Cancer Canada!!

Cancer is the leading cause of disease related death for Canadian children, yet it receives only 3% of funding from the Canadian government. Change starts with awareness.

Start collecting your gold gear!! We will walk along 19th St, over the Broadway bridge and back to the Amphitheatre. We will wear our Gold clothing and hold Gold signs, spreading awareness of Childhood Cancer!! We will be raising money for Childhood Cancer Research through Childhood Cancer Canada. All proceeds from our event go directly to Childhood Cancer Research in Canada.
